Maybe try a proxy website eg, https://www.proxysite.com/ (not a recommendation, just a site that came up in a search). Best to use it only for browsing not ordering though, if it works.

    Carpenters Apron

In college we have to wear an apron, most seem to use a cook's apron or similar. I got mine from Wilkinsons, £5 for a cotton cook's apron, either black or white, has an adjustable neck strap and has two large pockets. As far as I know, an apron usually only covers the chest down to the thighs...

    Well known auction site

If bidding war is defined as 2 or more people bidding against each other to be the current highest bidder, making many bids in small increments (as you would in a live auction), then you could have a bidding war right up to the last 5 seconds or so. Bids made at the last possible moment, ie...

    Well known auction site

There's only one bidder. The reserve is 145. Any bid below the 145 will make the current price at the starting price (85). Eg; The first bid was 100, but since there's no other bids, the current price will be 85. The second was 105 by the same person, but since there's no other bidders, the...

    Leather and Rust

I've seen rusty drill bits which were kept in a canvas roll, so I think tools going rusty in a leather tool roll is caused by moisture from being store in a cold place. Water condenses onto the tool and gets trapped by the tool roll, whereas without the tool roll the water has a chance to...

    Stanley V Stanley

Back on topic! I've got a 1930 Stanley no 6 (USA made with the keyhole lever cap) and the first thing I noticed about it was it was surprisingly light, it's about 300g lighter than my 1950s Record no 6. Compared with my later Stanleys (all UK made) it seems more finely made, with smoother...

    Car boot finds.

I think there are Ebay sellers who are are selling tools that they haven't bought from boot fairs etc to sell on Ebay! I haven't been to a boot fair for quite a while. I'm limited by having to rely on public transport, or my bike. There was one near me but was quite small, but they've moved...

    Leather and Rust

Err...but doesn't vegetable tanning use tannin? I would have thought it's chrome tanned leather which would not have had tannin applied during tanning. In any case I think any corrosion would be caused by water condensing on metal kept in a cold place. The water would then soak into the leather.

    Moseley chisel trademark?

I've found a Sheffield edge tool maker with the name Moseley: Moseley, George (Edge Tool Makers). Residing at 29 Nursery Street, in 1828-9. Recorded in: Pigot's Commercial Directory - 1828 to 1829. Moseley, George (Edge tool manufacturer). Residing at 17 Spring Street, in 1833. Recorded in...

Manual pillar drill doesn't go up and down

Thanks for all the replies, I've finally been able to try and actually drill something with it, and it seems to work! Yes that's how my one works, I think. Also as explained by BugBear: Mine looks like the same drill. I found this 1951 S. Tyzack advert which shows a very similar if not...

    Luthier workshop set up ?

Aren't there a few specialist tools that you do need or are very useful, like a bending iron (for bending ribs) or a thickness gauge (for archtop instruments)? They could be home made of course.

    Market for new wooden planes

I've been wondering about this, why do people pay £200 and more for a new wooden plane when you can get old ones for £1 to £10, at least in the UK you can. Another thread has got me to start this one specfically about this. Even the ECE hornbeam smoothing plane with awooden wedge "ony" cost...

    Diamond or ceramic stone?

I've been looking at which polishing stone to get, but whilst the slate price looks tempting, I probably won't buy as I don't agree with their pricing. The price is £7 for the stone and £7 for P&P, for each stone! Eg if you buy 3 stones, it's £21 for the 3 stones and £21 for P&P! Cost of...
