Whats your favourite penknife or multi tool .

I think Opinel do non locking versions of their knives. But the locking ring should be fairly easy to remove.

Whats your favourite penknife or multi tool .

I also have an Opinel no 8 and that little Swiss Army Knife (Victorinox Classic SD I think). I only got the Opinel (stainless blade) a few months ago and I only use it for lunch at work. It's brilliantly simple. The Victorinox Classic SD is on my keyring and I've had it for 20 years.

    Cold water tank flooding

Hi all, It's a cold water tank in a cupboard in a flat in a block, not a flat in converted house. I think the ball valve stop working, and water continued to fill the tank. There's an overflow pipe (white pipe. top right in photo) but that didn't seem to drain away the excess water. Result is...

    Repair split glue joint

One way to clamp is to glue blocks of wood with hide glue on either side of the joint, then clamp the blocks. The blocks can be mostly carved away leaving a thin layer which can be soaked off.

Use of old unused motor oil

Could use it anywhere that needs oiling, eg door hinges, locks, bikes, apart from where a special oil is required. Also quenching for steel hardening and tempering.

    Handmade: Britain's Best Woodworker

There was "The Chop: Britain’s Top Woodworker" on Sky. The first episode was broadcast in Oct 2020, but the rest got cancelled from airing. It seems both programmes were commissioned at around the same time.

    Emir closing down?

Has Emir closed down? I was reading the recent thread on Emir wooden planes and decided to have a look at their website, eg: https://emir.co.uk/product-tag/wooden-workbench/ which turns up a blank page with "This website has been deactivated". I also read they made all their staff redundant...

    Hermes gone to the dogs?

I had a 71 router plane chucked over the back garden gate which then broke, it was Hermes's fault and also the seller's fault for using a very thin card box with no padding.

    Rusty old planes.

I would say third pic top is Stanley 60 1/2 low angle block plane, it might have "60 1/2" on the side under the rust. The other is Stanley 75 Bullnose Plane.

    Clifton Planes

Clifton's own website, Clifton Bench Plane no. 4 - Smoothing says: and no planes are shown as out of stock, which sounds like they're still making them.

Request for advice - long fine furniture making course

I think all the tools should be provided on a course, and which are maintained by a technician. That means the teachers can concentrate on techniques using the same tools which are set up the same way and not worry about any students' potentially deficient tools. I agree there's no substitute...

    Resources for making wooden planes

http://www.handplane.com/32/practical-plane-making-1/ I learnt a lot from those articles when I started making wooden planes.

    scotch glue

From Oxford English Dictionary: "Scotch glue n. animal glue of a type originally made in Scotland, and traditionally used in furniture restoration, carpentry, etc. 1826 Hull Packet 18 Apr. 5 Tons Transparent Scotch Glue. 1907 R. L. Fernbach Glues & Gelatine v. 96 Scotch Glue.—Several...

Anyone bought tools from the EU recently?

I think that's for consignments of less than £135. Above that, it's as before, you pay VAT and duties to Royal Mail etc. Obviously the seller should be charging ex VAT prices but I don't think many do. Some couriers have apparently also added their own "processing/admin/paperwork fees", which...

Reusing wood from old antique furniture?

I'm definitely against chopping up furniture just because it's out of fashion at the moment!

    102/apron plane mouth width

And the same doesn't go for Veritas?
  18. J

    102/apron plane mouth width

Actually, 1mm might not so wide after all, my 1920s Stanley no 6 is 1mm and 1960s Record 5 1/2 is 1.5mm.

    102/apron plane mouth width

Well that has put me off the Veritas apron plane! Although I might still get their normal sized block plane. I'm sure Veritas has their reasons to choose to make the mouth bigger than the Lie-Nielsen 102 , maybe they expect it to be mostly used for end grain. Lie Nielsen in their 102...

    102/apron plane mouth width

I'm looking to get a decent 102 sized block plane, my choices are Lie Nielsen 102, Workshop Heaven Quangsheng Luban 102, and Veritas Apron plane. Does anyone know the mouth width with the blade in place of the Veritas Apron plane? Apparently, Veritas said: "The 1/8” is the machined opening in...
