    Dating Norton Arkansas Pocket Stone

I've got this Norton Abrasives Arkansas (hard white)Pocket Stone, seems to be new old stock. It's very small: 50x20x6mm. Does anyone know how old it is? The label on the stone is a transfer/decal, the colours are very bright. Some clues that might help are: "Pike" brand name on stone and box...

    Sorry to be leaving

I think that would be caused by having the screen brightness set too high. The white background is sending out too much light, resulting in too much contrast if the text is black. On my laptop and desktop monitor, both LCD, I adjust the brightness so that the white background is about the...

    Making wooden planes in India

Just in case anyone didn't notice, the price list is dated 1999. The author probably made that visit nearly 20 years ago.

    Essential hand planes

What he suggests seems to be a jack plane. A fore plane is a number 6, in between a 5 and 7.

How flat is your bench, musings on thicknessing , techniques

I would say they (the technique of moving the plane and cap iron setting) are two separate things. Someone could move the plane correctly using a single iron plane and get a flat surface.

How flat is your bench, musings on thicknessing , techniques

A separate board has the advantage it will not get the wear and tear that a bench top will get.

    Krenovian Damascas Plane

Machined laminated planes are easy to make!

    Ease edges on plane?

Yes, I would say adjust your grip so you're not pressing on the corners or edge. If this design was uncomfortable it wouldn't been made for more than 100 years!

How flat is your bench, musings on thicknessing , techniques

I also found it hard to understand the first post. "Snipe" means tearout? To "shim" something means checking for flatness/straight?

    Sorby Pro-Edge

I've read a lot about the Pro-Edge on this forum but I get the impression it doesn't overheat the steel. Or perhaps it does but you have to do the dip in water thing, as you would on a bench grinder. I've used a linisher before and it certainly overheats the steel if you abrade for more than a...

    Copying tools

In overall appearance and style, the Veritas is almost the same as the Rapier mentioned upthread. The manufacturer of the Woodriver version could just say they copied the Rapier, or another earlier tool. The Veritas seems to have flat handles whereas the Woodriver has thumb "depressions"...

    Violin peg hole reamer

I bought a cheap one from Ebay (a few years ago when they were't as cheap as they are now!) and I've also used a much more expensive Herdim reamer. I've only used them a bit, my impression is the cheaper one is less sharp, but still sharp enough. In any case the final finish of the hole is...

    Aldi chisel quality

Both the chisels are from Lidl, as mentioned "Powerfix" is used by Lidl whereas Aldi uses "Workzone". I think the last couple of times when Lidl had them, they had beech handles, before that they were ash and before that hornbeam. I've got the ones with ash handles from Lidl and also Aldi and I...

Mounting an irregular stone in plaster?

If I had an irregular stone I would cut the "hole" in the box to fit the stone. Re checking the stone top and box bottom are parallel, improvise a height gauge with a bit of wood, a pencil and blutack!

    Experience, efficiency and enjoyment.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to think that! We're talking about sawing and cutting bits of wood, not playing Beethoven's violin concerto!

    Non-Wobbly Utility Knife Recommendations

I've got a Stanley knife with a retractable blade but it also has a knob on the end of the handle that locks the the blade absolutely solid. I can't find a pic of it online so maybe it's not made anymore.

Vintage Record 09 1/2 block plane

Those £100 prices are fixed-price Buy-it-Nows, ie asking prices not sold. You need to search for sold listings or completed listings. The Record 09 1/2 seems to go for about £25-£40. The less common 018 is about £50-£60. IMO all overpriced! The version with the screw instead of the lever was...

    Cheap chinese wooden block plane.

I've got one of these planes. The wood is soft, it's been stained a dark colour, the actual wood is light brown, and it's crudely made. The cross pin and the bed is not parallel to each other. The blade is good and takes a sharp edge. It's branded "Mudingfang" (with a d) with the same style...
