    Beech and ash

Ash has large pores and is "open/ coarse grained" whereas beech has almost invisible pores.

    Marking gauge (wheel variety)

With a pin gauge or a cutting gauge, whether or not the stem/shaft rests on the workpiece depends on how far the pin or knife sticks out. If they stick out quite a bit, then you have to use the "no stem contact" method, some might say that's the wrong way but it still works.

    Marking gauge (wheel variety)

Hold the fence against the workpiece then move the gauge down until the wheel touches. Keep the gauge pressing on the side of the workpiece and move the gauge along the workpiece to make the mark.

    Marking gauge (wheel variety)

I could be wrong but I've always thought a wheel marking gauge is not used in the same way as a pin one. With the pin gauge, you hold the fence against the workpiece and rest the pin stem on the workpiece and rotate it so that pin touches the workpiece. But with a wheel gauge, you only have to...

    "I.D.FY" on C.Hill carving tool

Obviously the family goes a way back, just like any family, but the start of Aaron Hildick Ltd seems to be 1853.

    "I.D.FY" on C.Hill carving tool

I've got 2 C.Hill carving gouges, one side says "C.Hill, Sheffield", the other has a canon trademark and then "I.D.FY". Does anyone what is "I.D.FY"? I found the following on a Charles Hill of Sheffield: http://sheffieldindexers.com/TradeDirec ... ent_page=2 Incidentally, Marples was...

Wooden Plough Plane setup & prices

Re prices, make sure you tick the "sold" box on the left when searching. Buy it now and auction starting prices are meaningless as sellers can choose whatever price they like. Just a few days ago a set of 15 plough plane iron was sold for £15 inc P&P.

    Saw stop

But lots of people, (in the US if going by what you see in Youtube videos), never used any safety measures, (ie riving knife, blade guard, keeping hands away from blade etc), to start with. And Sawstop will let them continue to use a table saw like that, why would they start to use any safety...

    Paring chisel thickness

I've finally manage to get a bevel edge thin paring chisel for a relatively reasonable price, although still quite expensive. Thickness near the handle is 4mm, tapering down to 2.7mm at the cutting edge, width is 22mm. The lands are small and it is definitely bendy! I need it for work, so I...

    shelf life of PVA

My Toolstation 502 pva has turned into a really thick translucent gel, it's so thick I can't squeeze it out of the bottle. It's not even that old, more than a year I think but it can't be more than 2. The previous time I checked, about a month ago, it was still white but quite thick and lumpy...

Replacement iron for 9 1/2 block plane

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to get one of each. I just dug out a modern Stanley 102 (with red cap and same size as 120/220/9 1/2). I don't think the blade has ever been sharpened, most of the grinding marks on the back came off quite quickly on diamond stones and after honing seemed...

    Stanley 60 1/2 block planes.

I've got one, a later Stanley 60 1/2 (with lateral adjuster), like the one linked to in the first post. The milling of the bed is off, it's not parallel with the sole going across. If you sharpen the blade as normal ie 90 degrees to the blade sides or centreline, the cutting edge will be...

Replacement iron for 9 1/2 block plane

Has anyone got any experience of new Stanley replacement irons? I'm after one for my Record 9 1/2 which takes the older style of blade. This Stanley one is about £8: https://www.stanleytools.com/en-us/prod ... ade/12-331 Ray Iles makes them but it's £17 (13.50+3.50P&P). All I'm looking for...

New Laws vs Mail Order Tools

https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/b ... #pb3-l1g15 It seems the plan is to outlaw the mail order selling of bladed items to residential addresses?! The effect is going to be huge! What about if the blade is completely blunt? Or delivery to your work address, if you've got one.

    Cannels - anybody know why?

The Oxford English Dictionary is available online to anyone with a UK library card. The entry on "cannel" is as follows (simple copy and paste, there's a lot of abbreviation eg ME=Middle English etc), although there's no mention of the word in relation to gouges: Basically, "cannel" is related...
