How to make lots of cabinets fast.

Like you said, different skills. What you mentioned is more to do with knowing that wood is highly variable and reacts differently to being machined rather than having hand skills. All woodworkers need to be aware that wood is a natural and non-uniform material. How does machining wood and...

How to make lots of cabinets fast.

Err... of course there's different levels of skill! Compare the carvings of Grinling Gibbons with someone pushing a bit wood through a saw. Even though things like how fast you feed the bit of wood makes a difference, how is that on the same hierarchy as the works of Grinling Gibbons? Another...

    Troubleshooting plane.

It looks like the sole is concave which is preventing thin shavings. Concave is much worse than convex but at least with concave you can lap it out. A convex sole needs scrapers/files to flatten.

    Stanley 60 1/2 block plane

The later version of the 60 1/2 (with lateral adjuster) seems to have a bigger bed than that narrow strip but my particular example has the bed ground wonky, off square, and needs the blade to sharpen on a skew.

Smallish block plane for female hands?

You can use two hands which is how I use a block plane. I think the 102 models are the smallest usuable block planes, 120mm long, off the top of my head. The Stanley and Record versions are pretty crude planes with wide mouths and no screw adjustments. The modern version by eg Lie Neilsen is...

    Stanley 60 1/2 block plane

Maybe the rear of the mouth got chipped and someone filed it straight across. Although the cutting edge to the front of the mouth gap wouldn't change unless the bedding angle changed as well. It just means there's more unsupported blade at the edge. I can't tell from the photo if the bed (bit...

    Ebay Record 043

Haha, I've just sold a Record 071 but I'm not giving away any further details! Unfortunately for sellers, I don't think the current prices will last.

Book review - Goodman's British Planemakers 4th Edition

I know it's a history of plane makers and obviously imperial measurements were used at the time but does the book give metric alongside imperial?

Record No.18 Knuckle Joint Block Plane

I've got this plane, although it has problems with the adjustable sole. It takes the same blade as the older versions of the Record 09 1/2 and Stanley 9 1/2. I actually prefer the Record/Stanley 9 1/2 because of its lower shape. The snap cap (I don't know what it's called, the bit you push with...

    Ebay Record 043

Yep, the seller got lucky with 2 bidders bidding high. The third highest bidder's highest bid was £32. And the losing bidder made their bid too early. It does have that nice old tool patina though, and it's the older version with flat thumb screws. Crappy auction with next to nothing in the...

100 year old new Stanley plane

I suppose there aren't many completely new unused 100+ year old planes around, assuming it's not a fake. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Stanley-NOS-No ... 4730558822 I think that particular nickel plated version is dated 1900-1920. OK, it's a mass produced tool, probably tens of thousands and more...

    Posting parcels over 2kg

I'm not sure whether to put this thread in the Hand Tools section or General Chat (Off-Topic), mods? I'm begining to sell off some of my hand tools but this is also relevant for people buying tools. The prices for sending stuff weighing 2-3kg is ridiculous. Royal Mail's pricing for Second...

Ripple maple Finish Osmo or Morrells shellac

Violin makers generally avid using stain (on bare wood) as stain can kill the 3D effect and "burn" in the figuring. Exactly by the end grain absorbing the stain and then you lose the rippling effect when you change the angle of view. It might be different for guitar makers though.

    Carving knives

For chip carving, I think you need a knife with a very short blade, eg: https://www.woodworkersinstitute.com/wo ... ing-guide/ For general carving, some examples: https://www.woodworkersinstitute.com/wo ... -round-up/ I don't think Henry Taylor make carving knives.

    Old Record, Stanley, Marples ...

Assuming they're genuine bids, it looks like 2 bidders in the last 5 minutes were bidding against each other and the price went from £300 to £640. There were a few other bidders but they stop at £200 to £300. It does seem this type of router is quite rare and there is now demand from beginners...

Quangsheng vs Wood River (Jointer and Jack Plane):

I understand Quangsheng planes are completely devoid of any maker's name or branding, and they are completely anonymous, why is that? If I was choosing, I would go for Woodriver, at least their planes has "Woodriver" on them. And also I quite like the knuckle joint design and no one else...

    Paring chisel without bolster

So the side bevels (along the chisel) were already there and only the tang needs to be shaped? I was wondering how the maker got the bevels so straight and flat.

    Paring chisel without bolster

I got these 2 long thinish bevel edge paring chisels that don't have bolsters/shoulders, width is 16mm and 17mm. There's no maker's names. I don't think they are turning tools as they are only 3.2mm thick and have normal chisel handles. They seem to be be very well made, the bevels are...
