    Axminster price increasing

Amazon prices go up and down all the time. If you need something urgently, it's luck whether you pay a high or low price.

    Bringing goods from the EU

I think for consignments of under £135 you pay VAT to Dictum, then they give the VAT to the UK govt. Over £135, you pay VAT to Royal Mail/courier plus a handling fee, ie the seller's price won't include VAT. You might have to pay import duties as well.

    Wood glue

One double bass I worked on was glued with something which wasn't hide glue. The colour was off white, and very hard and tough, I thought it was epoxy but someone said it was casein glue.

    The ethics of tropical hardwoods

My opinion is tropical hardwoods should only be used for their structural and mechanical properties (eg hardness, resonance) which in practice means acoustic musical instruments and not for decorative uses, not even for veneers which I think of as "fakes". Anyhow, I thought nobody wants dark...

    The ethics of tropical hardwoods

If population is taken into account, China 1.4 billion USA 330 million Japan 125 million Germany 83 million UK 66 million then using the figures quoted: USA imports 3.8 times more than China Japan imports 4.7 times more than China Germany imports 6 times more than China UK imports 6.3 times...

    Little general purpose workshop mallet

I think the idea with a round carving mallet is don't need to turn the mallet or twist your wrist because your chisel will be in different directions all the time, not that you don't need to hit it square on. Isn't it a hammer really?

    Fish tail chisels

I've got 2 skew chisels, made from normal chisels, useful for: inside of violin, cello etc pegboxes, violin, cello neck joints, making wooden planes.

    Lidl Update

Re the chisels, the Lidl (Powerfix) ones have European ash handles and "Abraham Diederichs, Wuppertal" on the back of the packet. Aldi's are "Workzone", have ash handles and "Produced in China for Aldi" on the back of the packet. The actual chisels look and feel exactly the same. I think...

    Invasion of US Capitol building

They're forced to from a young age. I believe every school has a ceremony everyday pledging allegiance to the flag. The flag is sacred symbol in the US. I'm not American so correct me if I'm wrong.

    Bringing goods from the EU

That section is not very clear: Where it says "Where the import OSS is not used", maybe it's referring to consignments of over 150 Euros:

    Bringing goods from the EU

Voluntary would be more sensible. Although the following is not very clear and "voluntary" is not used. From: https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/business/vat/modernising-vat-cross-border-ecommerce_en

    Bringing goods from the EU

It's actually EU law that the UK has decided to keep, or had to. They could have written: "This essentially means that overseas retailers sending goods to the EU are expected to register, collect and pay EU VAT if the sale value is less than €150." and it'll be true. Also, the exemption for...

    Youtube !

https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/about/foi-legal-framework-AB16 Further down: You have to read info from TV Licensing very carefully as they're deliberately vague in places and leave out info. In summary: A licence is needed for watching or recording live broadcast TV (any channel including...

    Bringing goods from the EU

UK law regarding import duties and VAT is changing in 2021. It's actually an EU law that the UK has decided to keep after 31 Dec 2020. The exemptions for low cost goods are going to be scraped, the threshold being £19 and £37 for commercial products and gifts respectively IIRC...

Has anyone mastered the Hovel pencil plane?

I prefer to use a chisel or knife, but only to cut away the wood, and use the pencil "blunt". I use a mechanical pencil if I need a fine point.
