Cheap digital, or quality dial ?

The iGaging EZ range seem to go down well with woodworkers. I had a play with one of them at Peter Sefton's shop and they are easy to read and certainly more than accurate enough for woodworking. If you need them for anything beyond woodworking I'd be inclined to get a digital unit like...

    Clifton 4 1/2 Smoother

One thing I just noticed, the plane only has a one piece cap iron, I assumed that the Clifton's had the two piece cap irons these days. Am I missing something here?

    Clifton 4 1/2 Smoother

Just received a Clifton 4 1/2 Jumbo Smoother. My first Clifton and have to say it gives Lie Nielsen a run for their money, not as ultra refined as a Lie Nielsen in my opinion (and not necessarily a bad thing either) but a superb looking plane definitely and in the same league. Apologies to the...

    What tools are necessary

If you wanted to make chopping boards, unless you are churning out lots of them then a table saw and a planer thicknesser is complete overkill and could potentially suck the enjoyment out of the process in the short term. If you want to batch out a few chopping boards then a decent set of bench...

The irritating world of discount codes (yandles or ffx - any working ones?)

I started using Honey a few weeks back and saved a fair amount of cash and hassle. No I'm not affiliated with them in any shape or form and ordinarily I wouldn't touch a voucher browser add-on but these guys were recently bought out by Paypal so I figured if I trust Paypal secure sessions on my...

    Shooting board

All valid points. I will throw out all my tools and fashion some form of sharp implement from a disposable plastic fork. I do get the gist of your response Jacob but I'm kind of done being told I don't need the tools I have to achieve the results I want and in the way I want to preform that...

    1/2 router recommendation

When you go to the 8mm / 1/4" size you get into the router or trim router choice. I have a Makita RT0 trimmer with a few base options which was bought to trim some edges on a large project - it has been a handy tool to have around since. I don't know how the build quality stacks up against the...

    Do I need a 5 1/2 plane.

Pick one up, use it and if it works for you then keep it, if not then sell it on and possibly take a small hit on the postage.

    Shooting board

Thanks for the replies, it is appreciated. I echo the comments on accepting it's not a necessary tool, more a welcome one. I've been shifting to hand tools more and more and getting the best tools I can to enjoy it more. I've seen the Paul Sellers version but my requirement is for angles beyond...

    Shooting board

Appreciate this has likely been done to death but can people share their real world opinions on shooting boards? Finally got my hands on a decent shooting board plane with plenty of heft and will be making a suitable shooting board to go with it. I appreciate the T'internet is littered with...

    1/2 router recommendation

I'd go with brands that are associated with being a good source of well built machines like the Elu. The Makita 3612 is also a bullet proof machine and can be had for decent prices as well, the 3612c model is the preferred option in my opinion. The problem with second use machines though...

    Masks that work with specs!

To add to the info, the 3M 7500 respirators have a downward exhale port which helps to prevent fogging. Also any decent motorbike shop will sell antifog spray that is used on the inside of visors. It lasts longer than other techniques and cheap enough.

    What's your Router Plane Style

Just posted on the other thread on making router planes, got me thinking that this is probably one of the few last strands of woodworking tool manufacture that small firms or even one-person setups can still make a difference. I appreciate that Karl Hotley probably totally contradicts that...

    DIY router plane.

I'd never thought to have a go at making a router plane, there is little to it in parts and as pointed out up there ^, lots of options in off the shelf cutters. I have a Syil X4 CNC that is sat in storage (awaiting a new workshop), would be (relatively) easy enough to machine a brass base...

    Lie Nielsen Planes

I have an old original Stanley No 2 that I got for a good price some years ago. I don't have big hands but find it cumbersome to use, I can see the crossover in terms of it being seen as a block plane for some but it doesn't work for me. Given the prices for even No 2's these days I can see it...

10 cruise ships laying off Torquay this weekend .

Not quite sure you understand the dire circumstances your life needs to be in to be claiming asylum in another country. It only needs a little empathy to have some grasp of how bad life is for some on this planet.
