    Woodworkers tool kit 1962-4 style

I seem to recall that North America refers to hessian as "Burlap".

Why can't I buy z-clips or Figure 8 Fasteners in Ireland?!?

MoorzKK, Usually made from one piece hardwood, groove normally 4mm (I use a biscuit jointer or a router with slot cutter). Easiest way to make cleats is to use a piece of timber however long you need and around 50mm wide, size depends on number of cleats, run it across a saw to form the tongue...

Why can't I buy z-clips or Figure 8 Fasteners in Ireland?!?

I bult a heavy oak table 30+years ago and held the top down with hardwood blocks (cleats) a block with a small tongue that fits a slot in the frame. Why use metal fittings when these cleats are so easy to make?

    Woodworkers tool kit 1962-4 style

My Dad was a carpenter/joiner for forty years and he had the normal stones for chisels and plane blades. For saws he had a wooden saw vice, to grip the saw, that he leaned the frame against a bench and used a saw set and file. All tradesmen were then expected to sharpen/clean their tools at the...

Pocket Hole screws - where to purchase?

I used my Kreg pocket hole jig to make large barn doors and I used ordinary plated screws. There is no sign of these failing after almost 10 years. If the intended use is outdoors furniture I would stop the "head recess" with a decent water resistant filler. I just would not use any steel screws...

    Cleaning oak doors

Agree with Dee J. Oak and wirewool do not agree with oneanother! Scotchbrite sanding pads only.As above white spirits to clean off wax and oxalic acid to bleach out marks. For large surfaces I have used the scotchbrite pads to apply the wax.

    Drill/ reamer/ tap storage?

Big vote from me too ref.Bisley drawers. I have all of my drill bits in one. All of my many and varied taps/dies sets are all in their original wooden boxes, these have routed slots keeping all the pieces separate. This far and away the best solution, good woodworking exercise to replicate!

    Building control (or not)

We are building a house on part of our garden (for our daughter and S-i-L). We are using a private building inspector and they are more than nit picking, the paperwork trail is seemingly endless and requirements to photograph all of the details as well. This is the 5th house I have built and the...

    Bench grinding wheels

I was rather disturbed by the OP indicating that the machine vibrates (when not bolted down), as all of the bench grinders I have had run very smoothly and bolting down is to counteract the forces you put on the wheel(s) when in use. Sounds like there is a balance problem as that is a small grinder.

    Veneering curves

Have you come across hot melt sheet glue? (Can't think of its proper name!) I used this extensively for a large tricky job. The glue comes on a roll with a barrier sheet. The procedure is to iron the glue down (through the barrier sheet) and then iron the veneer down. Where veneer is a bit wavy...

    Moving a wood burner.

I would concern myself more with either improving the existing workshop heater's efficiency (what do you burn?) and/or the level of insulation. Why risk upsetting a neighbour when there are other avenues? The various heat redistribution measures already suggested would be well worth considering...

Prepping a soot-stained wall prior to repainting

Some years ago I repainted a room that had years of wood smoke from an open fire. I started off trying to clean with sugar soap and it caused an un-holy mess (Client was a man of the cloth). Then I discovered Zinsser, heaven, my, get out of jail card. So I would agree with Imageel above. Do not...

    Canabis farms

GuitardoctorW7, I am sorry but we must live in different worlds! No, we don't have a drink at the end of the day and we don't go for a meal at the weekend. Though I am retired nothing has really changed. I spent 13+ years in the Royal Navy where drinking culture was...

    Phar out finishing techniques

One area you will need to experiment with is the grain structure and its effect on colours or tints (even within the same piece of timber. Some timbers will have much more open (grain) pores, which will soak up stain and give a darker result. This can be reduced by using thinned shellac polish...

    Canabis farms

The original post I made was that it should be such a massive operation, in a minor Town (Littlehampton) in Sussex. This was their second bust of these warehouse production farms locally in the last month, which surely is repeated across the country (the farms not he bust).. At which point do...

    Canabis farms

My original post was to highlight the sheer scale of this operation. This operation was in a small town on the South Coast. I absolutely agree with SammyQ. Deregulating would lead to a downward spiral in cost which would make the availability much greater with no quality control. I have seen the...

    Canabis farms

My daughter manages a warehouse company on an Industrial estate. Several of the large units are empty. The one behind their unit was raided by Police on Friday to uncover a huge Canabis operation. My daughter was shown inside and she was amazed at the size and complexity of the operation on two...

    Breaking News: Post Office Scandal

This software would have had "key-loggers", so any alterations would have been logged. Contrary to what Jacob has stated. Every single transaction would have been logged but you would have had to look, which it is obvious they didn't. With computer progs. it is extremely difficult to hide your...

    Woodworkers tool kit 1962-4 style

I finally made the decision to join the Royal Navy for an apprenticeship. When one day a work colleague (who I thouht of as "old" but probably in his late forties was dancing around the workshop, because he now had qualified for a third weeks holiday. I think it was after 12 years! By that time...

    Hello

Hello Sam, Though I am 76 and retired, I attended West Dean College full time for one year 1977/78, the Antique Furniture Restoration course. I have lived in this corner of West Sussex since 1972 (Drafted to RN Unit at RAF Tangmere; the Navy unit stayed on until 1977, when...
