    Reproducing an old bow window

In my past antique furniture days, I often had to repair/replace 13 pane barred door glass. I always used a solid scraper like you, though I did only use traditional putty. As for resizing photos, virtually all photo editing programs will allow you to do that. I actually use a free program...

    Boiler efficiency query

Edit fault code was F76 (don't know where that "9" came from).

    Boiler efficiency query

Thanks for the update Deema. Hopefully the heat-exchanger of our Vaillant will be replaced on Wednesday as this was the part affected by its fault code of F769 Overheat). Unfortunately having a physio appointment at the same time I am unlikely to be able to quiz the Vaillant engineer. My wife...

    Oak Writing Desk

A couple of points, That size of desk if fitted with a leather insert would have two choices. 1. A skiver, normally sheep leather but would need to be in two pieces for that size) . The leather being enbossed in three panels the join being one third so that the...

    Oak Writing Desk

With regards to straight edges. In our workshop we had to rebuld 10 ft x 6ft doors, as I needed a 10' plus straight edge, I went to a metals supplier and there is a particular type of steel that is pefectly straight. From memory (though I do have them stored away) they were something like 50mm x...

    Screw removal from gate help.

I agree with gcusick, that the best way. I have mostly made my own but I do have one that I bought but I can't remeber where! I usually use a battery drill but start the drill by hand turning the chuck to get a small depression and then it will drill just fine. By all means use a guide but I...

    Screw removal from gate help.

Make a "core drill" from steel tube with an inside diameter larger than snapped screw, file saw tooth profile around end, battery drill, slow speed to the full depth of screw, lever out to remainder. It is also possible to buy ready made drill but have often used this method in furniture...

    Spoonerisms....

When working at a house the cleaner regaled us with tales of her young Grandaughter "Throwing a Tandem". Heard it several times before I realised what she was actually saying.

    Oak Writing Desk

With leather desk tops (Skiver) it often was done by making a shallow sloping groove around circumference at the required inset from desk edge, with a router bit with the router base tilted i.e. pack up one side. the max depth would be equal to the leather thickness down to nothing. Can also be...

    Pivoting pocket doors

We used Blum pocket door hardware several times for TV cabinets (when TV sets were big and bulky). I can't remember the sizing details. We also made furniture for the Four Seasons, Hotel, Park Lane, for their business centre, which was alongside reception and they wanted everything hidden when...

    Boiler efficiency query

I think I just about follow this subject! We built a pair of cottages using ASHPs with one having both floors with UF heating and one with UFH down and special low heat rads for upstairs. Don't recall much difference overall. The system was programmed to fire up the immersion heater every now...

    Planning application

It is straightdorward to download the required site and location plans that are required. I used BuyaPlan without any problem. They look exactly like the ones you illustrated. Your quote doesn't seem out of line. The quote you had would seem to include the application paperwork as well, which...

Engineered wood flooring - concrete floor prep

With due respect, if that was a radon barier its installation would have been checked by building control and I very much doubt that it would have been approved. i.e correct material, correct overlaps and correct tape on these joins. That is why I believe it is something else more like a dpc or...

    Scheppach planer thicknesser HMS260

I have had this model for years and it is awaiting a bit of TLC as it has been stored a few years. Very good machine and easy to set up. Probably hardest (as in fiddly) is setting the planer blade height and getting it level across the blade.

Engineered wood flooring - concrete floor prep

Radon barrier is normally coloured green, so I don't think that is a barrier. There is a companion tape for joining overlaps of radon barrier. Coloured tapes to indicate buried pipes or cables would never be that close to the surface (cowboy tradesman excepted). As we live in a low radon area...

Vaillant EcoTec 624 Gas Boiler shutting down with overheating code F76

Thank you for all of your suggestions of the root of possible problems. First indication was no hot water early evening for showers. No one has touched the boiler prior to entering the fault mode. I am getting a gas safe engineer in, but wanted to rule out a costly boiler replacement i.e. are...

As I have (hopefully) just finished the build of a detatched house for Daughter and SiL. I can attest to bitter experience that the whole building experience is a nightmare. ( we have built four houses before this one but never again. Some have commented above in a light hearted way about...

Vaillant EcoTec 624 Gas Boiler shutting down with overheating code F76

Our Vaillant boiler has shut down with a F76 fault code. Googling says that is boiler overheating fault. I am trying to find out whether this damages the boiler or is there some kind of a built in protection device. Also what can lead to this fault.
