    Accu-Burr Burnisher

Many years ago I made my burnisher from a three-cornered engineer's bearing scraper. I ground and polished the sharp corners of the scraper and it worked fine. I was also taught to draw out a burr ( after dressing the edge clean and square), with the cabinet scaper flat on the bench, which you...

With the size of those router cutters it would be a router table job for safety. Not for the faint hearted.

Where to buy cornice in the UK?

Bought some pine cornice last week from Atlantic timber, Cheshire. For ease of posting it is supplied in 2.1 mtr. lengths but they can supply longer, though carriage no doubt would be higher. Received inside 24 hrs. ! I am on the South Coast so great service, particularly at this time of the...

Measured paper pad for drawing plans

I have used an A4 Pyramid Liner pad/folder for years, I probably bought it at a Woodworker show. This link shows the range Freehand Designer product range from Straightlines.com UK I normally use replacement pads of tracing paper.

I agree, Sapele, and also question the quoted age like Phil Pascoe. Looks much later.

Cabinet fronts for vans - best method?

In your shoes I would make the doors etc. as light as you like. Then get them painted by a company that is set-up for two pack paints.

    Which screws for laying floorboards?

HOJ, Completely agree, my house is 1920 built as a County Council smallholding and the basics are sound enough but your photos are so familiar to my own. Having installed central heating I have had just about every board upstairs up. I have reinforced any floor joist that has been butchered...

Air source Heat Pumps any good?

Spectric, If what you say is true (sub-standard sheds), then that is a failure of Building Control. I have built four houses in the last 18 years and the insulation requirements have increased massively. Such that cavity width has increased above the often standard 100mm or four inch in the...

Oak ledged doors, where to put strap hinges

Phill05, Agree if Framed, ledged and braced as per your illustration, but there are some doors (my original house doors) that don't have a frame. Also if F/L/B door the modern way would be butt hinges.

    Which screws for laying floorboards?

I once was installing alcove cabinets at a customers house. He announced thet he was going to nail down upstairs floorboard as the plumber had finished. Later I heard sounds of water dripping, finding that water was dripping off the passageway light fitting. The customer had very neatly nailed...

Oak ledged doors, where to put strap hinges

The problem of fixing to ledges is the swing of the door, if fixing directly to the ledge. Most commonly rather more decorative hinges are fixed to the face side in alignment to those ledges. In my house I have replaced all of the original pine ledged and braced doors (1920 house). The hinges...

    Hinges in mdf

Doug71 is correct, MDF is often more akin to a stack of paper glued together. Screwing into the edge forces those layers apart, hence screws don't hold. There are so many kinds of hinges (look up Hafele for instance) available to fix into the face side that it is rarely a problem. Edging with...

    Compressor question - connectors

I have two compressors a small portable and a large workshop one. I use a mix of PCL and Euro. For air tools that require lubricant I use one type (Euro in my case) and for spraying I use PCL with an oil trap. I also have made up converters, short length of airline hose with appropriate...

    Vintage Workmate spares??

Isaac Lord list a "Thames Glide" 8mm threaded, either tap an 8mm hole or clearance and use two 8mm nuts. These are probably 25-30 mm diameter foot. No idea why they are called "Thames" glides but I have used them for years on adjustable plinths, (with tee-nuts with wood) etc. They would do the job!

    Veneering advise

I don't know where you are but I have had very complex veneer work (Mahogany curl veneers with crossbanding etc.) and have used professional veneer workshops. They have all of the equipment (including heated presses and v.large guillotines) and I have never found them expensive compared to the...

    Spots all along wood

Not sure from the photo but looks like contamination from metal particles. This is common if using steel wool on bare oak as the steel particles react with the tannin in the oak. I haven't seen it on Iroko but it may be a possibility. What does the supplier say?

Which expanding foam to use on attic floor to fill gaps between gyproc

Not quite sure why you need to seal gaps in plasterboard. As Jones says, if it is skimmed below then it is sealed. You can use foil self adhesive tape as an added seal. If you use rigid foam insulation that is the tape used, which would allow you to have a higher degree of insulation and seal...

Steel Box Profile Roof on Log Cabin workshop

I am rather late to you question! I have a similar cabin but not as a workshop (Home office) 10m X 3m. As I was concerned about appearance, I went for Fibre cement slates, see below, which can be used down to 15 degree slope. I found them easy to fix and cut. The ridge flashing is aluminium...
