    Finishing brass with?

Any shellac product will seal brass. It can be coloured or tinted if required. Being meths based very easy to remove/redo and quick drying.

Dealing with rats in subfloor void

I completely agree with those who say block all entry points with wire mesh etc. Do not underestimate how small a hole they can get through. I once heard "crackling" at a 13 Amp socket and thinking it was a loose wire, proceeded to remove the faceplate and found an electrocuted mouse. It was a...

    Painting old beams white

Though I am a great fan of Zinsser paints, in this case I can't agree. The Building inspector insisted on intumescent paint for steel beams on a new build, even though the beams 8"x10"were in a platerboarded ceiling void. The paint in a fire forms a protective skin that delays melting! I bought...

    Adding 45 degree chamfer

I agree with imageel. In our workshop we had a small radius router cutter (which we referred to as a "baby roundover") permanently set up in a cheap router, which meant no setting up to carry out just this function.

    Adding 45 degree chamfer

I would go for a combination of router (a bit shy of the finished size) and then block plane to take the final pass, as the router will give the 45 degree guide.

Experience of / Advice about : Foam insulation backed plasterboard

On YouTube CharlieDIY covered this very well in his own(Old) house and is well worth a look. He is worth watching as he does't waffle but is honest in his approach and the results.

    Best VALUE router table.

I have a Aluminium/cast iron router table, which looks identical to that Record one that Ollie78 posted, that I will be selling as soon as I can extract it from my barn (been stored for several years!) I have a Hitachi 1/2" router fitted. As the table top is on gas struts it makes adjustments or...

Didn't know this tool even existed!

This is the device that I have seen a fencing contractor use for mortice in fence posts for the arris rails.

Increasing precision for hand mitre cutting.

Recipio, Curious to know what a triple mitre box line inlay is!

Increasing precision for hand mitre cutting.

Just4Fun, That was lucky. There were various cheap copies of the Nobex but they were rubbish and inaccurate. The top of the range one has a greater height capacity than the basic model. I screwed a block to the base so it will sit in a vice or workmate and makes it very handy.

Increasing precision for hand mitre cutting.

I have used the Nobex mitre saw for many years and with the availability of many different blades it is often easier to cut mouldings, skirting boards etc. by hand rather than machine. I also use it when tiling for the trims plastic and aluminium. Great device but the top of the range one is now...

Working to close tolerance with wood

One of the "wind-up" quotes in the Royal Navy was that "Shipwrights measure to the nearest Ship". Not that such a quip would pass my lips!

    Moving granite worktop

For removing silicon I would use an old Japanese saw as they are thin. For moving the best device would be Piano Wheels, used for moving Grand Pianos, maybe borrow from a local removal company?. A four close-coupled wheeled trolley. Usually have solid rubber wheels. To move about you push down...

    Old Pump Restoration.

Really impressive restoration, maybe one day I might restore one I have! It is always nice when something unexpected is found on old CDs or hard drives. I recently found a CD of photos of furniture made in my workshop more than 20 years ago, that I had totally forgotten.

    Boiler problems.

John Brown, The attached wiring diagram and layout are pretty much what my own installation is. As I had a similar problem it was the three port valve. If you lift off the top section (lots of descriptions on YouTube), you should be able to rotate the valve (stem) by hand. If...

    Mondays Guess the Wood Contest

As Sapele and Utile are both of the genus Entandrophragma, it would be difficult to tell them apart. My Atlas of end-grain photomicrographs (1961) illustrates three versions of Meranti, Dark Red, White and Yellow, further complicating identity. I'm staying out of this one! From my days at school...

    Rexon Wg180a Wet Grinder

Many years ago(!) I had a Sharpenset knife grinder, that I used for chisels. This grinder used a cylindrical stone with a built in pump to direct recirculated water over the stone. I seem to recall Draper produced their own version with a water container above the stone that drizzled over the...

    Powered Respirators

Agent_Zed, I would argue against your university lecturer on sanding asbestos. In my time in the Royal Navy (1960s/70s), asbestos was in widespread use, lagging steam pipes etc. In our ex-navy association we have lost many members to asbestosis. One friend currently in the last...

    Basic router questions

MJward, We have communicated various times, mainly about design. I will be selling my cast Iron router table with a half inch Hitachi router soon, could probably do a deal with a bunch of cutters. The heavy cast top lifts up on gas struts for access to the router. I am on a list...

    Walk-in wardrobe

MJ, No, a snug fit is usual panel products can vary in size. I rarely used 9mm, favouring 6mm material, which is stiff enough unless huge door!. I also have router cutters sets that mould the frame and cut a 6mm slot. (Rail & Style (Profile & Scribe) Router Cutter Door Sets) These have the...
