    Underfloor heating over existing floor

I forgot to say the increase in height was only around 20-25mm, plus carpet!

    Underfloor heating over existing floor

I built two cottages and used the Nuheat Lopro on top of chipboard floor, 12 years ago, this was for upstairs. The ground floor also had u/floor heating with Knauf flooring and then Oak laminated flooring. From memory the pipes were laid in grooved polystyrene sheets and then thin plywood over...

Help appreciated with switching to LED downlights!

One other benefit (in summer) is reduction in heat from the lamps. I had halogen in a kitchen and you could feel the heat as you passed under them!

Hand sanding, using 6" circular discs?

Simple, because the post bype2dave was whether anyone had experience of using a velcro block for circular discs. I doubt there is a woodworker who hasn't used a wood or cork block but that wasn't the question. The velcro block is very light and the abrasive does not creep along a wood block...

Hand sanding, using 6" circular discs?

pe2dave, I have used a velcro pad as posted by Essex Workshop for many years, so much so it has started to "crumble". Can't beat it highly receomended, mine is the 150mm version.

This one of the joys of this forum. I had never heard of "Bristol Levers", in spite of using them for years LoL.

The things your parents said to you...

When I was working on fitting a new kitchen in a house, the housekeeper started a conversation about her Grand child "throwing a tandem". I still love that phrase and use it to this day! Bye the Bye these forums need a spell checker, my keyboard keeps printing the wrong words.

    Hello from Alderney, Channel Islands

oneoddguy, A return is on my bucket list! Interesting that you are connected with the Cinema, it was one of those stand out memories of that time. It was only in such small coastal Minesweeper, that it was possible to get into Alderney. All the other ships I served in were...

what are these hinges called ?

Cisamcgu, The construction of a draw leaf table is very simple, each leaf has two tapered bearers on the underside of the leaf. As you pull on the leaf, the taper causes the centre section to rise slightly, the taper keeps the leaf level with the centre section, which drops back...

    cisamcgu, A draw leaf table?

what are these hinges called ?

cisamcgu, A different approach would be to use a "rule joint" where the flaps hang down when not needed. Try illustrations of a rule joint or Pembroke Table in google, you will find YouTube videos on the subject. The hinges are on the underside and thus not visible. The rule...

    Central Heating system help

Deema, I would get a plumber that knows his stuff to survey your installation. To my mind that is the work of a bodger. The underfloor heating installation seems to be tidy, so probably different installers. Agree with davethebb, what installer would mount an electrical box on the...

Kity 613 bandsaw - changing tyres and about to give up!

Rob_H, Stick with it! I have had my Kitty 613 from new (more than 20 years ago) and it has been a great bandsaw. Hope I am not tempting fate!

    Foot switch for lathe safety?

I think that preventing an accident is the key here. The various safety suggestions are wise. Most accidents when turning wood tend to be the timber ejecting (for what ever reason) or a "dig in". No switch will alleviate those situations. If that is an issue a plexiglas shield would prevent...

    Need help staining pine

Agree with Myfordman. Any staining directly on pine will be blotchy, so sealing that with shellac first is a great help. Most industrial finishing will be tinted lacquer of some sort. I would also say that pine darkens with exposure to light, which kills most of the yellow.

    Foot switch for lathe safety?

This is the kind of switch that you need at knee or thigh level, you can just nudge it with your leg, this one in Screwfix around £20 .

    Foot switch for lathe safety?

My ML8 has a stop button that is positioned at thigh height i.e . just below the bed, and is very easy to actuate, with leg or hand. I have accidentally hit it when turning but have always thought "better safe than sorry", so never felt like moving it. I would definitely advocate a safety cut...

    Is this African Blackwood?

I believe it is likely to be African Blackwood. It would be difficult to tell the various Dalbergia (Tulipwood, rosewood(s), Kingwood, Af.Blackwood), strains apart without end grain microscope view.

    Hello from Alderney, Channel Islands

Welcome, I visited Alderney several times as a Sea Cadet with the RNR minesweepers around 1960/61 wonderful rural Island quite unlike Jersey & Guernsey. The "Cinema" then was upstairs in a timber building, rather like a parish hall, fond memories.
