Welcome Ed, Visited Charlotte N.C many years ago with the Royal Navy (1971?) and frequented a bar called "The Assembly Line". They featured old Newsreel footage showin sporting events, Rocky Marciano comes to mind. Including old film of American Football where they passed...

    Yet another Wood ID thread

I agree cherry/pear/ apple ie fruit wood. I can't be bothered to photograph but out of my window I can see birch logs. The trees (two) were cut down months ago and they are white throughout the end grain. When split for firewood they are white/cream throughout. The birch bark peels off in...

woodworm holes suddenly appeared in new build bookcase

pe2dave, Yes, the sapwood is extremely susceptible to infestation by woodworm or in other parts of the world much bigger beasts! When at College (1977) studying Antique Furniture Restoration. We had a lecture from a Rentokil scientist on the subject, extremely interesting. I have...

woodworm holes suddenly appeared in new build bookcase

As an antique restorer, I used woodworm treatment injected into the flight holes using a hyperdermic (from a friendly vet, they use large ones). This will penetrate much deeper and kill off any that are still to fly. As you will see from the flight holes, they are pretty small. Then keep up the...

    ML8 parts help

Dale, Have you had a response to your post? I have one of these but before I dismantle the clamp assembly for photos need to know whether you have sorted it already.

    Small metal lathe

In my Royal Navy apprenticeship, once all exams were finished I was detailed off to the workshop to make mini brass cannons (think HMS Victory). These were given to visiting VIPs. I found that you could quickly turn them free hand, using the X and Y cross slide handles, with an aluminium profile...

New Shower Tray - Tile Behind or Tile To

Roger Bisby from Skillbuilder Utube chanel covers this very well. Using lightweight insulated fully waterproof foam board which is designed to be tiled on. At the shower tray I use one of the angle mouldings that sits behind the tiles and lips onto the tray. I have additionally used this board...

Charnwood W815 lathe keeps blowing fuses :(

In your shoes I would insist on a replacement. This machine obviously has an inherent fault. There is no way such a small motor should be blowing fuses in that way.

    Deck replacement

I built a house twenty years ago with a very large deck area. I used 6x2 treated joists supported by galvanised strap hangers concreted into the ground. (6" circular hole using auger) Ten years later the timber decking rotted (the then owner didn't treat the decking). The professional company...

Today was a very different day than I planned

There is a downside to having neons on the fused spurs. My late MiL had severe dementia and every twenty minutes she would tell me that "I had left everything on"!

Today was a very different day than I planned

paulrbarnard, Your method of individual single socket below wired to a fused spur above the worktop is exactly how I do it. It makes it so easy to maintain an appliance or replace it when it fails. I absolutely understand the daughter bit! We currently are building a house...

Deep cracks in support posts ... Do I need to fill them?

I would make a trough and fill will P.E.G solution and soak the supports in this solution. This is exactly the method (though long term spray of solution ) that was used on the Tudor Warship The Mary Rose. Peg (polyethelene glycol) replaces the water in the cells and thus stabilises the timber.

Advice on loading above tree roots

I am afraid that anyone who plants a tree that close to a house is asking for trouble. We have had to state to our insurance company that there are no trees closer than 50 feet and cut down two silver birches that were 25 feet away (these two were just a couple of feet apart, who does that). Not...

Vertical support beam - concerning cracks

When restoring timber we did sometimes use polyethylene glycol, this was used on the Mary Rose to stabilise the structure and I think you would agree that was successful! I notice on the internet "World of Books" a used book on the subject at £3.50 or so. Looking this up on the net also threw up...

    Staining Mahogany black/white...

The most powerful bleaching agents are "Two-part" wood bleaches available from Polish Merchants (that's merchants who sell polishes, not Poland!). It is also possible to use oxalic acid to speed up the task. Definitely a PPE task (rubber gloves etc.). Often used in antique furniture restoration.

    Market cart

That looks like a re-purposed funeral or coffin bier. I can recall one being used for a funeral at Henfield church,Sussex.

How to treat worms in walnut?

Most wood worm killers are an insectiside in suspension of a light oil for penetration. Paraffin (Kerosene) alone will penetrate and kill any larve. If you have flight/exit holes use a hypodermic ( Equine Vets use large ones, which are ideal) to inject into the holes. These large hypodermic &...

    Wanted Strimmer

On my small Kawasaki I use the Oregon jet Fit setup. This takes two flexblade pieces up to 4mm, I use the ready cut pieces and it is so much easier than fiddling with spools. For bigger trimmers there is a four blade version.

    Wanted Strimmer

My strimmer is a Kawasaki 23A or 26A (can't remember which), it is a small one. I am afraid I don't do anything special just the correct mix. I have always heard about fuel stabiliser etc. but touch wood, never needed it. I have had a big Kawasaki, the cow horn handle type, which again was...

Help, what species of wood please?

I believe this to be English Walnut, not because of the finished cup but from the photo of the slice with the wrtiting (date) on it (5/23). Walnut has those streaks of black/grey in the grain. Agree not Yew, sycamore is pale and straight grained.
