    Drive by water meter readings.

One major problem with water meters is that the sewerage charge is a prorata of the water consumption, in a previous property this was 85%. We had a serious leak outside our house, not flowing into the foul water drains. We were charged several hundred pounds, which took months to fight (with a...

    Rulers.

In my Antique Furniture career I worked on many early French pieces of furniture and was interested to see that the measurements were close to imperial and no metric measurements. As to old money, I am sure that this aided grasping "adding and subtraction" to young minds, wth the times table...

Best hinge for a DIY murphy desk?

I agree that 400mm depth for a desktop is ample. One solution would be to use " wooden swing-out brackets", look up Pembroke table constuction.

3/4" Impact Sockets - Recommendation Request

The Ryobai 1/2" impact wrench I have, is listed at 265 Nm and that model is available (bare tool) at just £67 from SGS. The more powerful brushless model claims 700Nm and sells for around £110.

No water meter for us either but it we pay through the council tax rating system.

    Rulers.

In my apprenticeship (Royal Navy), we used rules marked imperial in 1/64ths and callipers. We did not use mikes but the examiner did. Now I can barely distinguish 1/16ths. I am perfectly happy with metric or imperial but as imperial is more "pictorial" I find it easier to "hold" it in my head...

3/4" Impact Sockets - Recommendation Request

I have the Ryobi One+ 1/4" & 1/2" impact drivers and the 1/2" packs serious torque but eats batteries so a 5Amp plus is needed. If you need more torque I agree with the "handraulic" scaffold pole approach. Oversizing means more bulk and more weight. As I also have air wrenches, my sockets were...

How to test drive a chainsaw

Forgot to add, the problem with most chainsaws (provide they start and run) I have had is the chain oil pump/device not working/blocking up which causes the chain to overheat.

How to test drive a chainsaw

TomB, This is what I like to see, intelligent practical advice! The only proviso I would add is that spares for Husqvarna (and other professional brands) are expensive. (I have one of these chainsaws!).

Not happy - Tin pot council officers who can issue fines.

The biggest problem today is that cars have increased in size and are warmer and quieter inside. This leads to inattention as they are sealed off from the world. My issue with driving in a strange town is that direction signs are placed by people who know where they are, when they should ask a...

    A London Thread?

It is tiresome when individuals wander off point and decend into mud slinging. I was born in Forest Hill South London in the 1940s and went to school yards from where Stephen Lawrence was murdered, so crime is nothing new. It is policing (or lack of it) that has multiplied knife crime. Remember...

    Washing machine

Seems to me this is going round the houses! I am sure the machine is at fault, you have to assert your rights to a replacement as the item is not fit for purpose. You should not have to put up with that much movements. We have two Hotpoint w/machines and they do dance a bit but not to your...

    Which type of screw?

I have used a lot of these type of screws, the best quality one do self-drill but I still found it best to drill a small pilot hole. The cheaper ones will shear quite easily and will work for non-structural use if again a small pilot hole is drilled.

    A smoking ban?

Having experience of four hospitals and two doctors surgeries in the past few years, I do not believe the NHS is underfunded. I absolutely agree that nurses should be paid more (though I am surprised that so many are very overweight). The management is topheavy, cuts corners (food and cleaning)...

    A smoking ban?

The sugar(and salt) is in processed food and has decreased as people become more aware of the ingrediants. Avoiding processed food is the key. The use of sugar or substitutes is far worse in North America, with obvious results. I would say that government initiatives are more likely to have...

Can anyone tell me how this table has been made?

Seeing Jacob mentiopning Piet Hein, I thought he was referring to the Danish man of the same name. He was the writer of many "Grooks", short pithy poems, that I have several volumes of. An example might be one that chimes nicely with workshops. THE ROAD TO WISDOM By Piet Hein The road to...
