    Chat (GBT) GPT

"If" it digests the whole of the internet it will end up going round in circles. How will it separate a conspiracy theory from the "true", remember, rubbish in = rubbish out.

Quick drying finish for pencil holders

With regard to airbrushes. I can recall that model plane makers used to spray the fabric with "dope" to stretch it. Funny how words now have a different meaning! I believe that was a form of cellolose lacquer. French polish is no more difficult to clean from an airbrush than acrylics.

Quick drying finish for pencil holders

Yes, Shellac finishes can be sprayed. On such small size pieces you can use an airbrush. I have used one frequently in the past for "shading"(mixing shellac finishes with pigments or stain) on edges etc.

    Scratch Stock

I have a metre lenghth of a large bandsaw blade, (about 50 mm wide and 1mm thick) from a Timber Mill. I have been cutting off pieces for years for scratch stocks. I cut a piece about 150mm long that I have cut profiles all around its circumference, which I use as it is.

Long (7ft+) floating desk build strategies

Your project is crying out for a Torsion-box construction. This gives stiffness to the structure but is also light. Modern fush doors are an extreme example (as they use cardboard for the core. Quite sure there will be lots of information on the internet. It would be possible to batten the wall...

    Festool Repair Experience.

On the subject of tool repairs, one YouTube channel that popped up was Dean Doherty(in Ireland of course). He repairs portable power tools for a living. The majority seem to be rather abused and grubby, not like us pristine woodworkers! It is very interesting to watch how various tools are taken...

Why do we have so many issues with software programs

I don't really have an issue with Microsoft and have windows 10 & 11 desktop computers except for their constantly altering my setup with windows update. I have Microsoft Office 2019 Pro but I also have LibreOffice and in LibreDraw you can edit PDFs, which I find useful. For the past 10 years I...

    Insulation and cladding

Though I now understand that the space you are filling with insulation is 200mm, I still beleive there are easier ways of achieving this. ie. Vertical battening the wall and screwing the OSB to the side of the battens. Then attach battens to the front edge of the OSB (glue and screw) to form the...

    Rulers.

With regard to the last two posts; I didn't know that! "Give instruction to a wise man and he will be yet wiser" (Was that the intro to all of those "Teach Yourself books?)

    Insulation and cladding

I can't comment on the overall approach, technique and materials you are using. However to me you are over complicating the job with your I-Beams. What you are producing is an OSB boarded wall, spaced off of the wall, with the I-Beam forming a space for you insulation. Why do you not just...

    Restoring an Edwardian Front door

The trick here with longer pins is to gradually feed them in the chuck i.e drill a bit the advance the pin etc. Very difficult to control a long thin pin!

    Restoring an Edwardian Front door

Well done, great result in this throw away world. One small tip with veneer pins or panel pins, cut the head off one put it in a drill and drill as though it was a "drill", once drilled use a full panel, or veneer pin and they drive in easily (head holds it in). I have fitted hundreds of feet of...

Advice to a 15 yo wanting a woodwork career

I have just read through these post from start to (current) finish, I think I will go and shoot myself! My father was a joiner (in central London) carrying his tools on public transport. He cautioned me against the woodworking trade when leaving school at 15 (1962), so I went into electronics...

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

I have a solid cast iron router table and there is no way I would cut a groove like that on a router table. I would use a long length of mdf (skirting available in 5.4 metre length), well supported. As you are covering up the end result I would screw each piece down while routing and as has been...

    Drive by water meter readings.

We are but a pin-prick on an evolutionary time scale. Evolution has taken us from small local councils, with local control to mega-authorities, with CEOs on more than twice a Primeminister's salary.

    Show us your Tobacco Tins!

What about those OXO tins that held OXO cubes, I used to ask the butchers for empties for my Dad (a carpenter) in the early 1950s. I have several old tobaco tins, must go and photograph them. I too have long used old large bandsaw blades to make scrapers and moulding cutters.

    Drive by water meter readings.

John Brown, That might be true in nature but we are talking mankind here. I have seen numerous businesses fail due to parasites. A pefect example recently was a fire in Midhurst, West Sussex that burnt down a listed Hotel, the "authority", insisted in closing the only through road, for three...

Brace bit in a regular, electric or pillar drill ?

The "grab" can be prevented by drilling a small pilot hole first with a twist drill.

    Drive by water meter readings.

I had gas connected two years ago and they installed what I took to be a smart meter alongside the electricity meter. The gas box with its meter is outside and we have to read it each month and supply it to the energy company! I photographed the two intallations and showed it to a friend who is...
