    Interesting site

Scrimper, I have boxes of old Hobbies magazines with the original plans. Must find the time to sort them! Many years ago I bought a fretwork machine off of a friend. This is a design I have never seen before or since. It has a cast frame that goes up and down on two shafts, in...

What's going on with these here mortice chisels?

Looks like it would be possible to cut the shaft to the same length as the old one.

Knock down Domino joinery. Great idea?

In my view knock down fittings are really only for a "one off" assembly. I would always design desks as modular where gravity hold the sections together. In cabinet making we used to specialise in computer desks and bureaus and designed them to be transportable in sections. The one in the photo...

Morrells Walnut Oil based stain alternatives - Advice needed

I used to buy Van **** crystals water stain from Morrels. This stain is made from walnut shells and we used it extensively in antique furniture restoration. The crystals are added to water to make whatever strength needed. Liberon also used to sell a version of this but I found it more powdery...

HELP I need a new desktop PC

Mondo, In an earlier post Artie, recomended a video. The chap is a bit of a geek (!), with a slightly odd delivery style (even to us Brits) but he is extremely good at explaining computers and not just linux but all flavours. He is Explaining Computers.com. He did a video on the...

    Greenhouse painting

rs6mra, Though your problem is solved, there are small spray guns that will work with a small compressor (similar size to yours). I have used them on-site where I could not use my big compressor, so I know they work. I have sprayed built-in furniture (Council Chamber) and leather upholstered...

    Steamy bathroom

The relevant Building Regs. is Part F. For a bathroom the minimum figure is 15 Lt/second. The calculation used is: How to calculate the extraction rate The fan size should consider the room size and not necessarily the minimum required by Part F of the Building Regulations. The extraction rate...

    Steamy bathroom

I have just finished a new build and two of the bathroom fans failed the (required Building Regs.) air test. Both had new fans which the sparks specified over the required extraction rate. I had to replace the low voltage 100mm one with a 150mm fan. The figures given by the company are extremely...

    How to mark up veneer?

Meths will remove lead pencil marks. The best for marking is to use veneer tape, this is a thin pre gummed (water based glue) paper tape. This removes easily after laying etc. either with a damp cloth or sanding. Commonly used to pull veneer joints together when laying veneer.

    Veneer Advice

Though I agree that solid lipping is best, I am sitting at a computer desk I made (and have used) twenty years ago and there is no damage or liffting of any of the edge banding (even on drawer edges). The material is oak faced mdf. I have never used plywood for veneer work but have always used...

    We Will Remember Them

Yesterday, marched as a veteran at the Cenotaph with the Fisgard Association (ex.RN Artificer Apprentices), members have written of their T-Class memories for our newsletter. I remember the loss of the Israeli submarine Dakar (1968), we were sent to search for her, being an anti-submarine...
