    New Planer/thicknesser

Hi Mike. I carefully considered the FS30-G before making the decision to buy the Holzprofi machine. Minimax have a reputation for quality machines and the Genius range seemed to offer an excellent quality-price ratio. Three things put me off though. First was that it seems quite lightweight at...

    New Planer/thicknesser

I bought a Holzprofi Maker DR310 planer thicknesser a few months ago. As the name suggests it has a 310mm (~12in) width capacity. The planer tables are 1.4m long in total. Like the Hammer range the tables are linked (not butterfly style) so the change over between modes is quick and easy. The...

    In praise of great companies.

I'll second the praise for Workshop Heaven. I've also found the service at @Wood Workers Workshop to be first class. Probably not much use to people in the UK but I bought machinery from Holzprofi France recently and would highly recommend them. The pre and post sale support was brilliant and...

Undoing a bow in a panel

I made some quick panel clamps this week. The image below shows a pair with two panels clamped. Each clamp consists of two 35mm thick planed hardwood bars (each 1m long) with matching 20mm holes drilled through to accept 18mm dowel rods. Put the panels to glue up between the bars then add...

    Femi tools.

Seems like a good option though heavy luggage if flying. I live in France (well Guyane actually) and tools do seem to be generally cheaper in the UK than in Metropolitan France. The DOM-TOMs are a whole other level of expensive! I bought all my portable power tools (track saw, routers, jigsaw...

    Femi tools.

Consider the Bosch GCM8SJL. Quality build and accurate out the box (in my experience). 216mm blade. Can crosscut up to ~310mm at 90 deg. Max depth of cut is 80mm if I remember correctly. I’ve never needed anything bigger for furniture builds and the occasional bit of carpentry / joinery work in...

    Plunge Saw and Router advice

I have the Bosch GKT55 and have found it to be a quality tool. I use it to rip and crosscut tropical hardwoods which it does without complaint. The supplied blade is decent but consider buying a pack of the Freud blades (pack of 2 including a 24T rip blade and a 48T crosscut blade). Switching...

Anyone pleased or advice with a cheap planer thicknesser.

Agreed that 6” width may be enough for most jobs. However the problem with (most) 6” planers (jointers) is the short length of the beds. It is difficult to properly flatten/straighten a long board when the reference tables are too short. I guess you could make extensions but it would need to be...

Carbide tipped bandsaw blade setup: aaagh!!

Possibly. The weld looks clean and no obvious defects. Anything in particular to check for?

Carbide tipped bandsaw blade setup: aaagh!!

Thanks Derek. I’ll try it on the max tension and see if that improves things. Was reluctant to do so for fear of over-tensioning and potentially damaging the blade or worse the saw frame. Bit surprised because the M42 blade feels stiffer (and actually has a thicker gauge) yet tensions well at...

    Bandsaw use of guide/guard

    Horrific!

Carbide tipped bandsaw blade setup: aaagh!!

One difference is that the M42 blade is a regular 3TPI whereas the carbide blade is vari-tooth (12/14/16mm pitch). Does tooth geometry effect the amount of tension required? The Laguna Resaw King blade is available in 20mm with the same vari tooth pattern. I’m sure people run that blade on...

Carbide tipped bandsaw blade setup: aaagh!!

Yeah will try that. Have had it close to the max but not right to the limit. What I don’t understand is why these carbide toothed blades require so much tension? I run a 20mm wide M42 blade without any issues and not close to full tension. Yet the M42 blade is 0.8mm thick compared to the 0.6mm...

    Steel rules

Do @Wood Workers Workshop not stock that particular iGaging rule you like? They have a lot of iGaging stuff. I’ve bought various bits and pieces from them including a 100mm double square which is a nice bit of kit.

Hi Tom, thanks for the detailed response. I'll reply properly later once the kids are in bed (y)

Carbide tipped bandsaw blade setup: aaagh!!

Yeah, put the 20mm M42 Tuffsaws blade back on, tracked and tensioned it and it works just as before - straight clean cuts. I will have another look at the carbide blade at some point but short of ideas on what to try that's different than before. How could it be a duff blade? Not well sharpened...

Carbide tipped bandsaw blade setup: aaagh!!

Hi Clogs Thanks for the reply. Is it normal to have to do this? I guess I can play around with the fence to see if I can realign it but I don't really understand why that would be necessary with this blade in particular but not with the M42 blades (where the fence is set parallel with the mitre...

Carbide tipped bandsaw blade setup: aaagh!!

Afternoon all, I have a new 17in bandsaw. The spec says it can accommodate blades up to 32mm wide. It was supplied with a 30mm carbon steel blade which I have never used. I bought a number of M42 (bimetal) blades of different widths and configurations from Ian at Tuffsaws and have been running...
