    Bandsaw Recommendation for Wood Ripping

Tom, you seem to missed Tibi's original post where he stated that he didn't have space for a large industrial saw. Also not everyone wants to restore and maintain second-hand machines. You're right that there can be some bargains out there but whether these are appropriate depends very much on a...

Bench Top Planer with Helical/Spiral Head

When you say planer, are you referring to a surface planer (jointer), thickness planer, or a combined machine I wonder?

Bench Top Planer with Helical/Spiral Head

I have the Axminster AT330ST spiral head benchtop thickness planer. Looks like they've discontinued it. I'll be selling mine soon after <2 years of light use as I've upgraded to a 12" combined PT (also with helical head). Given that I work exclusively with dense and abrasive tropical timbers...

    Bandsaw Recommendation for Wood Ripping

Do you use it on a workbench? And, if so, how is it fixed down? Or does it have a dedicated stand? I see that the RP Sabre 250 has an optional metal stand that effectively makes it a floorstanding machine (albeit still lightweight). My bandsaw is a larger 17" floorstanding model. Weighs ~150kg...

    Ironwood?

    Nice succinct response

    Ironwood?

Is Greenheart the same as Ipe (Handroanthus spp. / syn. Tabebuia spp.)? I ask because Ipe is apparently known as Groenhart (Greenheart?) in Suriname, where Dutch is spoken. And in Guyana (the former British colony) it is referred to as Ironwood. Here in French Guiana it is called Ébène verte...

    Bandsaw Recommendation for Wood Ripping

I don't see any reason why you can't rip hardwood boards on a small bandsaw. Re-sawing will obviously be limited by the stability of the machine, power of the motor and max depth of cut. If you're looking at a benchtop model then I would look to buy a higher quality machine like the Record...

    Anybody else love bandsaws?

If I was going to buy a 10” saw in the UK then it would be the Record Power Sabre 250. High quality at a reasonable price. https://www.recordpower.co.uk/product/sabre-250-bandsaw-230v-uk-and-european-lead-included#.YmKi2iWEqEc

Ever wonder how they did computing before computers?

The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India was a massive enterprise concerned with mapping and measuring all the territories of the subcontinent controlled by the British empire. It commenced its ‘North-Eastern Himalayan Series’ in 1845 and completed it in 1850. All of the giant Himalayan peaks...

    Which PT????

Which 260 machines? I don't have personal experience with the Metabo HC260 (which is a rebrand of the old Electra Beckum 260) but they seem quite popular with hobbyists. Major drawback would be the lack of weight and the short tables. The larger floorstanding machines like the Axminster...

    Which PT????

Would a second hand Metabo HC260 be good for you? Like this (but collection in Scotland!). Given that a small portable(ish) machine like this is selling for nearly £400 (without the fence), I'm not sure that £500 will get you much more. This used Fox PT is listed for £700, again in Scotland...

    Which PT????

Finding it hard to answer this question James. If you want a used machine, not too heavy, single phase I guess, with a restricted budget (£500), then the choice will be limited to whatever you can find that meets those criteria within an acceptable distance for collection. I've just had a look...

Lol. The most commented feature of my workshop. [Inherited as the house is a rental].

Outside that room under the “carport” I have a large homemade MFT with built in router table. Cyclonic dust extraction unit and wood storage rack overhead. Here’s a couple of better shots in a tidier time:

    Anybody else love bandsaws?

I have two work areas. A small room (4m x 2.7m) houses the bandsaw, PT, drill stand with table, and manual table saw mounted on a workmate. All except the drill press are on wheel bases. If I had a decent stationary table saw in this room I wouldn’t have space for much else. It’s already a...

Great thread btw - really enjoying seeing people’s creative use of old stuff!

Post a pic of something you have recycled

Made this modular bookshelf unit for my baby daughter using reclaimed hardwood. Previously it had spent 40+ years as part of the frame of a hut/shelter (known as a “carbet” in French) on the forest research station that my wife is in charge of. Where people would sling their hammocks, cook...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

A set of coasters in a holder for a mates 50th birthday pressie. Made from Partridgewood, which is a local species here in French Guiana. Sanded to 180 grit. Will be hand scraped before finish is applied. Thinking marine varnish (the stuff I bought is a poly resin base) but actually never used...

    Anybody else love bandsaws?

I don't have a tablesaw. I use a combination of bandsaw, tracksaw and planer thicknesser. Most ripping is done on the bandsaw. It cuts straight and true with a sharp Tuffsaws blade installed. Joint the ripped edge on the surface planer and thickness to dimension. Alternatively can use the...

    Mitre saw

I'd agree with much of what TheUnicorn said. Get yourself some kind of angle finder (a simple bevel gauge may be enough) to capture the wonky angles of the walls. Transfer to the boards and make the cuts by hand. If you don't already have a decent handsaw then consider Japanese pull saws, which...
