    Finding a square square..

Something very square (a calibrated granite stone!) They are manufactured to BS 939 B (DIN875) and have a tolerance of 0.016mm/0.00064" for every 150 mm of blade length.

    Finding a square square..

I bought one of these Fishers squares from Woodworkers Workshop for exactly this purpose. I only use it as a reference square and otherwise it stays safely wrapped up in its box. I asked them to double check it’s squareness prior to sending it out.

    Recommendations for a Planer/Thicknesser

Hi Gandalf There are pros and cons to buying new vs second-hand. Take a new machine and you can easily find something that meets your specified criteria, is covered under warranty, and hopefully comes with good after-sales technical support. However you will pay the full price, which for these...

    Mid-power plunge router advice

I currently have a Bosch GMF 1600 CE router. Twin bases, plunge base used for handheld work and fixed base mounted in the router table. Motor unit swaps between. Has performed well for a couple of years in both modes. Recently has developed an annoying habit of cutting out occasionally mid...

That bit looks like a slot cutter. Can you really use it to flatten slabs/slices?

Joint Genie - gone out of business? Best alternative dowelling jigs?

Thanks Droogs. I’ll check the Banggood offering out.

Joint Genie - gone out of business? Best alternative dowelling jigs?

Thanks James but I have the Wolfcraft jig that is plastic. It works but looking for a better built (metal), more precise and faster to use jig. Probably the JessEm or Dowelmax but there may be other high quality alternatives I’m not aware of.

Joint Genie - gone out of business? Best alternative dowelling jigs?

So the Dowelmax is superior to the JessEm jig? I’ve never used either so have no opinion but curious what it is that you think makes the Dowelmax the best? @Peter Sefton sells the JessEm jig which reviews well.

Joint Genie - gone out of business? Best alternative dowelling jigs?

Does anyone have a scoop on the company Joint Genie? Have been considering buying a dowelling jig for a while. I've looked at their products using the web address www.joint-genie.co.uk in the last year or so. That address now directs you to www.joint-genie.com. This site does not load and...

    Withdrawn iTech Table Saw

Must be losing my mind, sure there wasn't a price in the original message when I looked at it earlier. Apologies. When I asked what you'd be using it for, I was wondering how capable it was for ripping hardwoods (or whether you'd been mainly using it for sheet goods). And if you were happy with...

    Withdrawn iTech Table Saw

Hi, I think you need to include an asking price when advertising items for sale. Can you tell us a little about your experience with the saw? What have you used it for and how does it perform? Thanks.

    250mm ripping blade.

I'd recommend Freud blades. Not cheap but I wouldn't scrimp on blades. 28T would be better than 40T for ripping. What size blade does your saw take and what's the arbor size? Edit: doh - 250mm as it says in the title  Would this work? 24T ideal for ripping solid wood.

    Bandsaw Recommendation for Wood Ripping

I rip and resaw tropical hardwoods using a 17" (wheel Ø) bandsaw, 1.5KW motor, with a 3/4" (20mm) M42 bimetal blade. It works great, straight and true. I take care with feed rate, slower for thicker stock of course, but I don't find it really slow at all. Certainly much faster than attempting to...

    Bandsaw Recommendation for Wood Ripping

Hi Tom. Truth is I can't "prove" that the wheels or whatever are "within tolerance". However defined. But tbh what matters to me is that it cuts straight and true. And it does. So I'm not going to spend the time messing with it when there's no need. Ultimately it's a tool to get a job done. If a...

    Is this a joke ?.

Basically the same questions I was asking in the earlier thread I linked to. My concern is that the "Made in Britain" badge can be used rather disingenously (as in the examples you cite). I'd like to see the actual reshoring of manufacturing. Not all components necessarily but stuff made...

    Is this a joke ?.

Agree with all of this. I'd like to see more manufacturing return to the UK (and elsewhere in Europe) to create jobs and reduce the amount of dependency on global supply chains which aren't good for the environment and can be seriously disrupted as we've seen with the pandemic but could also be...

    Bandsaw Recommendation for Wood Ripping

Exactly this. My machine is, as Tom says, "compact". The footprint isn't small but certainly isn't as big as some of the 18 or 20" saws. It is also smaller height wise. I couldn't fit a larger saw into my small workshop. Period. So yes a few inches can make all the difference. And I don't have a...

    Is this a joke ?.

There was a thread about Record Power joining the "Made in Britain" organisation a while back (see here). What exactly are they now manufacturing in the UK? Have they "reshored" their entire production operations? Or is it just specific products or components? My understanding is that it is the...
