    First bandsaw

Forgot to mention Laguna. By all accounts they make real nice bandsaws - check out all the online reviews. Have won various awards. Very popular in the US. The 14|12 is about your price range (£1600 inc VAT). Very solid frame, 14 inch flywheels, impressive 330mm max depth of cut, 340mm max...

    First bandsaw

Hi Mario You don't say what you intend to do with the bandsaw or what power supply you have in your workshop. I'm assuming you have single phase and want a machine with at least 16 inch flywheels. For new machines in the UK around that price (a little higher but not much), have a look at these...

    Wanted: Jet JPT260 planer thicknesser

Does it have to be the Jet? Because @Zeddedhed apparently has a Hammer A3 26 for sale (see here). If I was in the UK and looking for a small planer thicknesser I'd be very interested in finding out more!

Tools: Fewer but more expensive, or more but cheaper?

For a workbench, you might consider building a pair of torsion-box beams like Josh Finn advocates in this article from Fine Woodworking. They are easy to construct (assuming you can get someone to cut the plywood parts to precise sizes with a tablesaw or tracksaw for you) and are very flat and...

I don't have much luck with jigsaws!

Yeah by all accounts the Mafell P1CC is the dogs. I use a Bosch GST160CE which is considerably cheaper and I don't have any complaints. Nicely balanced (the CE is the model with the palm grip, not the bow handle), sufficiently powerful for the tropical woods I work and, yes, it holds a blade.

But I have always done it that way!

I was reading Peter Korn's excellent book - Why we make things & why it matters: the education of a craftsman - yesterday and in it he recounts an amusing anedote: My father tells a story about a woman preparing pot roast for a family gathering. When her husband asks why she cuts the brisket...

Planing to make my own table saw out of a circular one... what would make a good circular saw to use?

Amazing. Just watched the whole series, totally mesmerised! The guy is seriously talented. Kinda reminds me of the Erika push-pull saw. Thanks for the link.

    Router with best dust extraction

@JobandKnock - how do you know all this stuff?
  9. Bojam

    Mains jigsaws.

I use the Bosch GST160CE (with the barrel grip). As long as you have the right blade for the job installed, it works very well.

    Buying a Tracksaw

But the choice isn't just cheapo vs festool is it? Makita, Bosch, Mafell... all excellent saws.

    Buying a Tracksaw

Same here. Worth mentioning that the Bosch GKT55 is remarkably similar to the substantially more expensive Mafell MT55CC. Very similar build but lacking a couple of the premium features like the scoring cut facility and the rapid blade change. I've never had a track saw that can make a scoring...

    Table saw vs band saw

One thing to add, which may be fairly obvious, is that good quality blades make a big difference. I've started using Freud blades on my tracksaw and SCMS. I have dedicated rip blades (24T) and crosscut blades (48T) for the tracksaw; changing them over takes very little time and the...

    Freud precision shear forstner bits

Yeah. Don't like buying from Amazon when I can avoid it. But that set that Akirk and I have is available at £70ish on Amazon which is an excellent price.

    Freud precision shear forstner bits

I cried then ordered the "normal" Bormax. Would have loved the Bormax 3's - especially since I work tropical hardwoods - but just couldn't bring myself to fork out that much cash. Other stuff to buy at the same time. Will see how the Bormax 2's hold up.

    Buying a Tracksaw

The same. The GKT55 is a superb saw! I find the tracks are excellent and the joining mechanism is flawless. I also have a Bosch router (GOF1600) and jigsaw (GST160) which are both compatible with the tracks (with the required accessories). Very happy with all the Bosch tools.

    Table saw vs band saw

When I started woodworking seriously a couple of years ago I made the decision to not buy a table saw. I started with a track saw (and a large homemade MFT style table with fences and accessories) and a SCMS. I have recently ordered a bandsaw that will hopefully arrive later this summer. I make...

    Freud precision shear forstner bits

Of which? I assume (hope) you mean the Freud bits?

    Another wood identification puzzle

Sorry I can't help with the ID. But great work with the bowls!

    Freud precision shear forstner bits

I was just about to post exactly the same thing. Not had a chance to use them yet but everything I've read says the same as you. For ~£70 I think it's a great deal.

    Which Diamond Stone?

I use this double sided stone too for plane blades and chisels and it's worked really well for me. I finish by stropping using this: Connell Double-Sided Strop c/w Dialux Paste
