    Sawstop News Update

Personally I think saw stop is a really good idea, and should probably be incorporated into all new saws. That said it does seem weird that our westerly cousins are thinking of making it mandatory whilst having no interest in the safe use of saws without the sawstop technology (if you tube is...

Tails or Pins first - Does it matter?

Eric, I've never done it, but I have seen Paul Sellers doing the same thing. I must give it a go one time

Tails or Pins first - Does it matter?

Mike (and others) I am curious about this and would value your input. When I make shelving for boats I dovetail the main carcass with the tails at the sides and the pins on the bottom and top, figuring that the downward force is greater than the sideways force, also I tend to leave the joinery...

    Hand plane sole flatness?

I got my local tool works/saw doctors, North London Saws (5 minutes walk from my house) to grind my plane soles and square one side, £25 to set up the machine and do one, £5 each for the others (I think they did 5, can't remember it was a few years ago). It's not a service they normally provide...

Floating Panels On Exterior Door Construction

Found a vid of a guy with a similar planer to yours, you may find the whole video useful, but the process I've described above starts at about 8 minutes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uXh1fx6JE0

Floating Panels On Exterior Door Construction

Hi Pollys13, at the dry dock where I work we have all sorts of gauges etc for presses and metal lathe work, I have never used them to set the planer knives. just a short piece of flat wood on the outfield table and rotate the blade by hand and it should move between 3 and 5mm, check at one end...

    Hand cut dovetails in sapele

Math is American English, maths is UK/Irish English. Neither is "correct English" as such a thing does not exist. I was just getting into the spirit of the conversation and being a knob.

    Festool Domino just blew up!

Hi, what is an "aldi jobbie"?
  11. P

    A planing question.

When I read that Charles made that table top in 2 1/2 hours and that DW has never wasted a stick when working by hand I really need to question my woodworking abilities. I'd be happy to have made that top in a day, and I can practically heat a boat with all my mistakes. As to the discussion...

    Festool Domino just blew up!

I've sent a few festool tools back for warranty repairs, including ones that have been heavily used (dropped, scratched etc.). They have always fixed them promptly with no quibbling. I would be amazed if they don't do the same with your domino. Paddy

    Edge Jointing Thin Stock

Studying in Cremona must have been amazing, My whole life plan is to retire in the next ten years, escape the boatyard, the noise, the machines, the poisons, dust and sparks that I cover myself with on a daily basis, withdraw to my shed and make. violins. I would love to visit Cremona

    Edge Jointing Thin Stock

I've planned plenty of table tops, panels etc. I meant I've only one done pair of violin plates. For most edge jointing I would have the wood in the vice and plane in my hands, where possible with both peices at the same time, much as you have described.. I did the violin plates with the plane...

    Edge Jointing Thin Stock

Violin top plates (and violas, cellos and basses) are made from Norwegian Spruce and are usually rub jointed but the sycamore bottom plate is clamped, I don't know the reason for the different approach, but imagine it must be to do with the hardness of the wood. The arching and thicknessing is...

    Saw sharpening

I get all my saw blades and router cutters sharpened by North London Saws in Waltham Cross. They will sharpen hand saws and do a mail order service. I've never actually had a hand saw sharpened by them as I do my own, but they are pretty good with my other cutty stuff. I'm sure you could discuss...

    Setting Bandsaw tension

Other than potentially damaging the bandsaw frame (unlikely in my case with an 8 foot tall wadkin) is there any disadvantage in over tensioning a blade?

    A Question

I have the following record bench planes 7, 6, 51/2, three 5s. Stanley 4 and 41/2. I always think my records are better than my stanleys, maybe just luck of the draw. Other record planes of mine, 071 router, no80 scrapper, little bullnose ting. Only ever bought one new plane, a premium...

Diamond Sharpening and Polishing Compound Recommendations

I use Ezelap plates and they work fine. TBH much of the time I only use the extra fine followed by a leather strop with some green stuff from Axminster. The coarse medium and fine are only really necessary if I've chipped an edge. When you first get the coarse it is incredible and it is tempting...
