    Dovetails in long pieces

I suppose if I cut the tails in the long boards horizontally then I could cut the pins in the vice, I'm just unsure if I can saw accurately enough with the boards horizontal, suppose I will find out tomorrow. Paddy

    Dovetails in long pieces

Due to a terrible oil spill in the river Lea the navigation is closed for the next couple of weeks so my dry dock is standing empty, so rather than worrying about how much money this is costing me I've decided to spend the week making some bits of furniture for my house and for my sister's 50th...

    Sapele vs. Oak for beginner

Just to avoid any confusion, I'm pretty sure Ed meant to say on a bevel down plane, bevel up planes don't have cap irons. Paddy

    Sapele vs. Oak for beginner

Silly Billy, it depends on what your making but I would personally suggest that you start with soft woods. You get a little more flexibility with joint accuracy, it's gentler on your tools (apart from the knots), it's cheap and is often grown sustainably. Avoid the low grade white wood from...

    Sapele vs. Oak for beginner

I find oak much easier to plane than ash, particularly English oak, infact the only thing I find easier about ash is the price.

Silverline Router Bits - Ok , or waste of time?

Hi Coley, I was brought up to the same sound track. My folks are still together and whilst they still bicker age has mellowed them both.

Silverline Router Bits - Ok , or waste of time?

Silverline bits may successfully cut a piece of wood, but they will soon be a cause of frustration, I echo the comments about Wealden, usually next day delivery, good quality and good value. Paddy

How do you get square 90deg. edges with a handplane?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJfD0-fFAzI A slightly cambred iron helps, but this will also work with a straight iron

    Jointer flatness . . . did I go far enough ?

DW, just an aside, hardly anyone in the UK drives automatics, they do exist but are a rarity, probably because they are inefficient and fuel is about treble the price here compared to the US. A quick google search suggests that 96% of cars sold in the US last year were automatic whereas in the...

    Ultex Diamond Sharpening Stones

I bought a 300 and a 1200 a while back, they seem to be the equal of my ezelap plates which cost a LOT more. I bought them to use in my mobile kit, although I have been using the 300 quite a bit as new plates have more bite than worn ones (my ezelap's have seen a lot of use). I have read that...

    Jointer flatness . . . did I go far enough ?

DW, my comment wasn't aimed at you. it was aimed at someone saying that planing straight/flat with a jointer is only to do with the cap setting and nothing to do with technique, and in the same sentence stating he had never used his jointer. Indeed he was 100% certain. I think that fits the...

    Jointer flatness . . . did I go far enough ?

DW, you speak of having done it my way for two years (there's a song in there), don't misunderstand, I absolutely agree that a close cap iron set is a useful weapon in the War On Tear, the only reason I piped up in this thread is that TTrees said he 100% knew the only to set up a plane that he...

    Jointer flatness . . . did I go far enough ?

Sorry Mike, I brought t up again, but only because I was a bit shocked at someone giving advice about how to set up a tool they stated they have never used. I'm reluctant to give advice on using tools I have used for 30 years!!!

    Jointer flatness . . . did I go far enough ?

DW, on a mild piece of timber, going with the grain, where tear is not an issue, do you think that the cap position makes any difference? I'm on my lunch break right now, but if I get a chance I will test this this afternoon, I will plane an edge with the cap set back and with it close set and...

    Under table extraction AGS 10

This week I intend to finally deal with the dust extraction from my AGS10. In this thread post1207881.html#p1207881 there are two very different approaches. One is to enclose the bottom of the saw and have a ramp for the dust and then a 4" outlet. presumably to a HVLP extractor, the other is a...

    Jointer flatness . . . did I go far enough ?

Wait a minute, you can say 100% that a tool you have never used needs to be set up a certain way??? A close set cap iron is useful for controlling tearout, but I, like other woodworkers for centuries can plane an edge without"diving off the end", or leaving "snipe" (TTrees description of his...

    Jointer flatness . . . did I go far enough ?

Short answer is yes, you have gone far enough, it will be fine. The slight concavity where you marked will not affect the planes performance, a convexity (a hump) could be a problem but the concavity (hollow) won't be. Novacaine's tone might be a little facetious, but he makes a good point, all...

Any Cheap & Decent NEW LA block plane which you can buy?

I have a QS 601/2, it is the only new plane I have ever bought and it s excellent. I bought the three iron set from WH, TBH I wouldn't bother with the three irons as I rarely change them.

    DAB Site Radio

For sure, I even used the safety thing as part of my reason for not letting him use them, just being honest here about my primary motivation. I'm not arguing with you Mike, I'm considering the validity of what you're saying with an open mind
