    +1 for using scrapers. Around knots the grain changes direction. Sometimes grain can change halfway down a board. Better craftsmen than me can apparently predict these changes by looking at the grain, I usually discover them when I make tearout. Some hardwoods have reversing grain all over...

    For the rip saw it is worth considering an ebay adventure and a file (probably a tenner for saw and a new file, bahcos are under a tenner. Filing a rip pattern is quite easy even on a fine toothed saw. It doesn't really matter whether the teeth are currently filed for rip or crosscut it only...

    Eric, thanks for this, I've been browsing this forum for a bit and had lots of useful links, but this is by far the most useful. I'm teaching my 6 year old daughter the fiddle and piano, if she grows up to sing country songs about wooden planes my life will be complete. Paddy
