Advice on new router and dovetail jig

I used to use a woodrat for dovetails (infact for all joints). It works well and gives good looking dovetails, but I got a bit annoyed by the noise and mess the router made. I saw David Barron on you tube and made myself a similar guide using a scrap of some brown hardwood and a couple of rare...

    Precision in hand work

I used to mostly use machines and hand held power tools and have over the last few years been using hand tool methods more and more. I was always under the impression that I would struggle to obtain the same level of accuracy with hand tools. In reality the opposite is true, I can easily adjust...

Comparison of tool prices over time.

Firstly I'm not asserting anything, I'm trying to get some data on which to base an opinion. I know this might seem weird to you Charles but I am quite comfortable not having an opinion when I don't have enough information to base it on. Secondly, I don't see any other way to ***** real prices...

Comparison of tool prices over time.

£2 would have been roughly one days wages, comparable to quangsheng in pricing (but not LN)

    LN No9 Mitre Plane

I think you'll find Stanley were worth millions and millions of dollars. As I explained in my new thread I can't be wrong (or right) about this as I don't know the answer, but purely how many planes were made does not answer the question. Data from a few people on this forum will not give a clear...

    LN No9 Mitre Plane

Derek, I edited my post and have posted my question in a slightly less rambling way in a new thread.

Comparison of tool prices over time.

There has been some discussion on another thread about how we can compare prices of tools over time. In short are LN and the like more expensive than Stanley were 50 years ago? This post is an attempt to collect some data on this question. So to older forum members, do you remember buying your...

    LN No9 Mitre Plane

You ask and interesting question here Charles How do we compare prices over time, do LN and the like cost more than Stanley and diston did 50 years ago? You are correct that we do not necessarily have reliable data to make comparisons (certainly I don't). As I find this an interesting question I...

    Dual head hammers

I have a thorex hammer that I use with my chisels but it has the white nylon on both faces, I have seen the faces sold separately ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Thor-Hammer-6 ... 1569991443 )and have been meaning to get a rubber one for assembly, however I already have a rubber mallet so it has...

How to ease the edges of holes with hand tools?

I am just finishing some seats on the front deck of a narrow boat and to lift the boards on the top to access storage I have drilled some 1" holes in the buffalo board they are made from. The edges are rather sharp and I have eased the edges with a roundover bit in an electric router so the...

Wadkin bursgreen table saw three phase

I have an AGS 10 and it is a good saw. £200 sounds like a bargain. However if I already had a decent saw that was doing what i needed of it I would not buy the wadkin. Even if you sold it for double it would be a lot of messing around with heavy saws (in and out of vans, through doorways etc.)...

Making A Stub Haunched Tenon & Mortice???

Probably I've never had a good enough fit to encounter the problem, will bear this technique in mind if I do encounter such an issue. Is this something you do as a matter of course or just when you encounter issues? I'll never be a writer, I just said "encounter" three times in two sentences...

Making A Stub Haunched Tenon & Mortice???

for most applications a 1/2" tenon is wide enough (12 or 13mm if you have metric tooling). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ygBmNrQkN4 is not a bad video for using a router to cut mortise. He doesn't pre drill with the router as custard recommended, either way is fine. Successive passes getting...

    Bread -n- Butter Job

I've been musing this the last couple of days. 24 hours seems fast to me particularly working from sawn wood with no machines, quick but doable, It would take me longer but I could imagine 24 hours, but ten hours, it just seems impossible, I could not imagine being able to work that fast. Paddy
