    soprano ukulele

I would like to make a soprano ukulele for my daughter, hopefully in time for Christmas. I've noticed there are a few luthiers on here and I was wondering if there are any easily available plans. I have a really cheap ukulele I could copy and have seen plans on Mathias Wandels web site for a...

    Paul Sellers - Trademark?

Phil, when I go to Wales I hear Welsh all the time , I hardly ever hear Irish in Ireland and have never heard Scottish in Scotland (you can't argue with carefully compiled statistics like that) yet there is BBC Alba in Scotland and TG4 in Ireland. Not saying your wrong but I'm surprised. Paddy

    Aldi 'Workzone' Pillar drill

Does anyone actually leave the chip guard on a drill? I've drilled millions (well a lot) of holes in metal and wood and have never felt the need for one, it's a pretty safe operation at low speed and chips don't get thrown up at your face. The main danger is the work piece getting stuck and...

    Wooden band saw

Thanks, will look forward to update. I watched Matthias' video and would love to make one. Probably won;t as I have very little free time and a huge Wadkin, but maybe when I retire. Paddy

    Paul Sellers - Trademark?

NoLegs, I've had a Romanian lad doing some work for at the dock me the last couple of weeks, nice lad and hard worker, but I was shocked to find out he had never heard of Wales, Ireland and Scotland for sure but not Wales. I still think he didn't quite believe me that outside the cities Welsh...

    Wooden band saw

Hi Chris, I was wondering if your student went ahead with this project. Paddy

    Face side

David, most of the boards I plane are just fine with a smoother, I also find that setting the cap iron close can help when the grain is unruly, however the last couple of days I've been planning loads of ash for a boat I'm fitting out. The boards are from quite small trees with many branches...

Steve Maskery Table saw DVD set

It seems a constant feature of my life that everyone I come across who does stuff I like and respect makes no money. The best craftsmen I meet are always struggling, the best musicians I come across can hardly afford to keep their vans on the road. And yet all around me there are people doing...

Steve Maskery Table saw DVD set

The DVD/CD on my lap top got broken a few years ago by my friends dog jumping up to say hello as I was putting a CD in. I hate spending money on technology when there are so many moulding plane profiles and gouges I still don't have, mind you I didn't realise they were only £15. Steve, my...

What's the general view of scraper planes?

just to add, I ticket the edge and turn the burr with a carbide burnisher from WH. They only cost about £20 and are dead fast, same for card scrapers. As with most sharpening jobs it is a bit tricky at first but after you've done it a few times it's dead fast.

What's the general view of scraper planes?

I use a stanley No.80 on difficult timbers all the time, I don't know if that counts as a "plane". It's great on boards with reversing grain and loads easier on your hands than a card scraper. It also leaves the wood somewhat flatter than a card scraper. As far as finish goes it probably is not...

Steve Maskery Table saw DVD set

Steve, I was going to send you this as a PM but it seems to fit into this thread. Do you sell, and if not have you considered selling, a download version of your CDs? I don't have DVD player and can't see myself ever having one. I am particularly interested in your bandsaw trilogy. Paddy

    Face side

I'm not sure it qualifies as a crowd, I thought there were only three people in the world who are initiated in "the secret of the capiron",

Making a Rebate Plane with Paul Sellers

Zeddedhed, do you think a a bevel edged chisel would be suitable as the bevel side needs to register against the back of the plane? I reckon a registered firmer would be a better bet. Paddy

    Workbench width

At work I have an 8x4 bench with a sacrificial mdf or ply top (currently mdf but it has been ply and maybe will be again) as it can take a piece of ply for cutting with the track saw. At home in my shed I built an English apron style bench 3x7 with a central tool well, mostly because I copied...

Which router? Newbie in need of advice.

Hi, As for chisels if you get down to Lidl in the next few days they have their specials , 4 chisels with wooden handles for £6.99, they are surprisingly good for the money. If you miss them then Narex chisels are good and cheap (although one chisel will be the same price as the 4 Lidl ones)...

    Faithfull Planes

I have a QS block plane and cannot fault it. I don't really know how an Lie Nielsen, Veritas or Clifton could be better (bear in mind I've never touched a clifton or veritas plane and only once used a LN). Certainly miles better than Faithful. I've never handled the QS no.4 but imagine it would...

    Why use cascamite?

Be careful with the idea that PU glue is good for gap filling. Sure the foam fills the gap but not with any strength. Check out https://woodgears.ca/joint_strength/gorilla_glue.html Paddy
