    HSS Bits

Well you certainly don't move operations to Sweden as a cost saving exercise.

    HSS Bits

I'm pretty sure dormer are made in England, they certainly were, but so much stuff gets farmed out to the far east now I'm not sure. A quick google search suggests they're still uk made, but sometimes these things can be deceptive. Personally I sharpen bits on a Sorby pro edge with a ceramic...

    HSS Bits

Are you planning to use them for drilling metal or wood? The ones Custard has recommended are only for wood, the ones the rest of us have recommended are primarily for metal but can drill wood. The Famag bits will be superior for drilling wood

Dormer Also it's well worth learning to sharpen them, then they effectively last forever (unless you snap them).

Be kind to a man of very little brain

Thanks Rxh. Next time I get a banana shaped plane I will definitely give this a go, it is a similar technique to a violin making technique of rubbing on a flat plate with graphite and then planning the high spots that I was shown a few years ago on a course I went on. Currently all my planes are...

    Thicknesser blade sharpening

North London Saws in Waltham Cross EN8 will sharpen them and probably sell you a spare pair so you can always have one set on the machine. http://www.nlstools.co.uk/ they also sharpen and sell band saw, table saw, router bits etc. Paddy

    Table Saw Smoking

If all the TCT teeth are present then getting the blade sharpened is not very expensive, can't remember how much but a lot cheaper than buying a new one. I use a local firm, North London Saws, I'm sure they do a postal service but you may find a local firm, don't bother with tool shops as they...

Finish straight on to planed surface?

Reading the endless back and forth of Charles and David on the cap iron thread something occurred to me that I have been meaning to ask. Assuming that you have hand planed your surface successfully with no tear and a shiny surface would you go straight to finish or would you give it a quick sand...

    Biscuits, Dowels, Floating Tenons, M&T?

I agree with Roger. Traditional mortise and tenon. All you need is a saw, chisel and mallet. Router plane or rebating block plane helps but not essential, either are worth the investment for a load of other tasks. Paddy edit. see Paul Sellers vids for instruction on you tube if unsure about how...

What (type - abrasive medium) are you using to finish tools?

For chisels and plane irons and knives, diamond stones (ezelap) and leather strop with some green stuff I got a long time ago (don't know what it is). Gouges with abrasive film stuck to shaped hardwood blocks (one hollow, one round custom made for each gouge ) followed by autsol on hardwood...

Where did the knowledge about the capiron get lost?

DW, I just put in a search for tear out on this site. The first result, from 2010, had 2 responses on the first page saying set the cap iron close . is-it-just-me-hand-plane-soft-pine-tearout-t46340.html I haven't read the rest of the thread or looked at the other results. You definitely did...

Where did the knowledge about the capiron get lost?

just noticed I misread the OP. I have been under the impression it was "WHEN did knowledge of the cap iron get lost?", but it's actually "WHERE did knowledge of the cap iron get lost" I know the answer, it got lost on the internet. Blooming big place so easily done, probably spent a few years...

Where did the knowledge about the capiron get lost?

On the issue of cap irons it's obviously a bit late, but perhaps the message you should/could take from this is that internet forums are not your best resource for learning. That 1950s stanley flier in Jonny PW's post said everything you needed to know. Published book after published book said...
