    Saw stop ( USA )

I entirely agree with Jacob about 2 push sticks, indeed I think it was Jacob himself who convinced me that one was not enough. It’s awkward at first, but it’s easy to master. However I entirely disagree with Jacob about sawstop. I think it’s a brilliant technology and should be on all saws. It’s...

    Makita track with Festool ts75

I’m after a 3m (ish) track for my ts75. The makita ones are considerably cheaper than Festool. I have read threads from people who have that set up who say it’s fine, eg https://sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?293065-New-Festool-ts75-owner-what-track-size-to-get-Makita-track But also other...

No sliding hook on Hultafors Talmeter tape measure

I’m not “alleging” anything, I’m saying the hook doesn’t slide. This means pushed up against something will give a different reading to hooked over the end of a board, that is why tapes have the sliding hookI was posting to see if anyone had one and how they got around this, not to have a row on...

No sliding hook on Hultafors Talmeter tape measure

I mean, loads of the features look handy, especially the inside measurement thing, but if it doesn’t perform basic duties, we’ll, I’m a bit disappointed

No sliding hook on Hultafors Talmeter tape measure

Yeah, I’ve read that, but it doesn’t answer my question

No sliding hook on Hultafors Talmeter tape measure

I got given a hultafors talmeter tape measure at Xmas. The hook at the end of the tape does not slide like a normal tape, and I’m a bit confused about how to use it. With a normal tape the sliding hook is to compensate for the thickness of the hook when taking measurements when you are up...

    Makita LS1019L mitre saw problem?

Hi, does anyone have a Makita LS1019L mitre saw? I’ve noticed the last few days that the laser wobbles about when I start the saw and I’m worried that this is indicative of the shaft being loose/bent. I’m 90% sure that this is a new thing. I have replaced the blade with a new one and it is still...

    Digital callipers.

FWIW I always use dial calipers. I find the vernier scale hard to read without my glasses (and lord knows where I put them down), and unlike digi ones, the battery never goes flat. I have a mitutoyo pair, but tbh a cheaper pair would probably be fine.

    Sharpenning carving gouges

I will do, but I have been on a week long course there before, and the normal set up is that they provide the tools, and sharpen them. It's a part time school in Cambridge, very much aimed at the hobbiest making one violin. I want to make one in my workshop whilst I make one at the college 2...

    Sharpenning carving gouges

Hi, I am going on a violin making course starting tomorrow (Monday). Now I know how you guys love to argue about sharpenning, and tbh I'm completely comfortable sharpenning straight tools, I am however curious to know how you sharpen your carving gouges, both inside and outside bevel. I have a...

Chipped edges on new planes and do new planes need sharpening before use?

Hmm, there may be some stylistic similarities but I can't imagine Jacob suggesting tools should be sharp from the box, secondary/tertiary bevels or staning DC. I mean, look at this quote "None of them are as simple as waving the blade at an oilstone "like I was taught 40 years ago by some old...

Third party tracks for festool saw

Has anyone bought/tried 3rd party tracks for festool saws? I need a new track and have noticed a few 3rd party ones considerably cheaper. There's 2 things I suppose, are they proper straight and does the saw fit on ok? Thanks

    TAble saw taper

The jig moves along with the piece, so you are cutting a straight line parallel to the fence, just with the workpiece held at an angle so there's no tension or binding.

    TAble saw taper

I know it's not quite what you're asking for, but having tried tapers on table saws, planers etc. I have long ago settled on just cutting them on the band saw and finishing with a hand plane. Just draw the taper lines in pencil and cut away from the line then plane to the line. No jigs no fuss...

It’s chisel time! Chisel me timbers! Your fav chisels!

I have always fancied some Ashley Isles chisels, I have one of their carving gouges and it is a thing of beauty. However I have a set of these https://www.workshopheaven.com/narex-ch ... tural.html[b] for finer work and a set of Liddle chisels for bashing stuff. The Narex cabinet chisels are...

    Clifton iorns in old planes

Ewan, yes I mean Quangsheng. The irons are standard carbon tool steel and are easy to sharpen with any stones (personally I use diamonds and a strop). AFAIK the planes re the equal of LN and Clifton but cost half the money, I only have their block plane and it is excellent. There are two main...

    Clifton iorns in old planes

Ewan, I am curious as to why you want to change the original iron. What advantage are you hoping to gain? I am not saying there is no advantage, I'm just curious as to what you are hoping to achieve. Perhaps Cheshire Chappie can explain in what way the plane performs better with the Victor iron...

New Laws vs Mail Order Tools

OMFG, so in order for me to get my chisels posted we need the army shooting civilians on the street, make sure "brainless" women have no power and even hate babies???? Well I was hoping for some sensible amendments to the proposed legislation, but if that's the trade off I'll drive to the shop...
