How to check if a chisel (or angled cut) is square

I completely agree with the Woodbrains and shed9. I started the thread as an aside to Petey83's thread about his Ashley Isles chisels being out of square out of the box. Until I'd read that thread I had not tested my chisels with a try square either. However when I did it reminded me of a...

How to check if a chisel (or angled cut) is square

Guys, I know being the OP doesn't make me "king of the thread", however could we possibly avoid descending into a pointless edgy (see what I did there) sharpening debate. Paddy

    bandsaw help

It sounds as if the weld is not quite lined up right. This is a common fault with bandsaw blades. There is nothing you can do to "tune" this out. Either ignore it or ring them and send it back for re-weld/replacement. Paddy

    Struggling to plane stock square

The above is spot on. Once you have a face and an edge you no longer need the square for reference just work to gauge lines from your good sides. In most applications it doesn't really matter if the other two sides are slightly off as all referencing for joints etc should be done from the face...

Ashley Isle's Chisels - So Dissapointed

iNewbie, I concluded they were aimed at me because you quoted me and clearly leveled them at me (all be it only when I "pipped up"). I apologise to you sir , I got mixed up, I was under the impression that this was a discussion forum, not Petey's private blog with you as his security. Maybe you...

Ashley Isle's Chisels - So Dissapointed

Hi Petey, my response to iNewbie was because he directly quoted me as an example of "badgering". If you have felt harassed by me I wholeheartedly apologise. I always try to be polite and constructive in my comments, both here and in my life in general. Paddy

Ashley Isle's Chisels - So Dissapointed

iNewbie, How you conclude that i am badgering him is beyond me. No where have I said that as a result of this post no one will buy AI's tools. Indeed I think it has been a useful and balanced discussion. This is a woodworking discussion forum, if you post something expect to have it discussed. I...

Lie Nielsen - So Not Dissapointed

Damn Derek, you've quoted me with my typo (poit) unedited. Thanks for the answer, I've never tried a posh plane, one of these days I might get one, probably not till I retire as my workplace (dry dock) is quite a harsh enviroment. Paddy

Lie Nielsen - So Not Dissapointed

What's the point of the low angle on a low angled jointer? I do use a low angled block plane for end grain but for jointing surely it would just encourage tear out. Not trying to knock your beautiful looking plane, just wondering. Paddy

How to check if a chisel (or angled cut) is square

Hi Corneel, As soon as I posted that occurred to me, a square would not be the correct tool to check a tapered mortise chisel. I suppose you could use a sliding bevel, but I think the most suitable tool for that job is your eyes (unfortunately I have vintage eyes so need to put glasses on, maybe...

Ashley Isle's Chisels - So Dissapointed

Totally agree with Corneel, all profiling work should be done at 90 degrees, as should heavy stock removal to get rid of a bad chip, then the bevel ground at the desired angle until it is close to the edge. This prevents blueing the steel. If you sharpen without a jig, as I do, grinding is only...

How to check if a chisel (or angled cut) is square

This is a follow up on Petey83's post about his AI chisels being out of square. I have decided to post it as a new thread as I don't want to get bogged down in whether he should have made the post, or whether it matters if a chisel is perfectly square or which shoes can be compared to which...

Ashley Isle's Chisels - So Dissapointed

Feel free to call in, I'm usually there every day except Saturday and Thursday afternoon. I do my tool grinding on a linisher (sorby pro edge). We have a dry grinder as well but the wheel is always got a groove in it from grinding tips from the tig welder. Paddy

Deema, a big blade doesn't just seem more dangerous, it is more dangerous. The bigger the blade the faster it moves and the more devastating kick back can be. I'm careful on any saw, but particularly so on some of the monster table saws I've used in the past. My saw is quite small and I usually...

Ashley Isle's Chisels - So Dissapointed

Sorry Petey, didn't mean to obsess about the shoes, it's just the dock is a rather hostile environment. I get through rigger boots at an alarming rate. I live right by NLS in Waltham Cross, my work is at Enfield Dock right by Enfield Lock. Paddy

Ashley Isle's Chisels - So Dissapointed

Whilst it is Pete's prerogative to complain about the chisels I don't see CC's response as "harassing". These posts come up high on google searches and future potential AI customers may well read them. Inexperienced wood workers could easily come away thinking that they wouldn't want to buy AI...

I would generally say the bigger the better, however I recently had to move my Wadkin bandsaw (don't know the model but it's more than8 foot tall and probably weighs more than a ton) across the workshop at the dock on an uneven floor going under joists that were too low, it was a days work for 2...

Ashley Isle's Chisels - So Dissapointed

Well if it's any consolation to those worried about the negative effect of this thread on Ashley Isles, I would just add that this thread has really made me want some of their chisels, I have a gouge by them and its fantastic. I already have too many chisels and they have too live in a harsh...

Ashley Isle's Chisels - So Dissapointed

AI offer lifetime regrinds o all their chisels, which seems a bit weird, I can't imagine sending a chisel away to be ground, but nevertheless had the OP sent them to AI I'm pretty sure they would have reground them square. No matter how much you pay for something there is always a chance that...
