    low angle smoother

Derek’s post is fascinating and I am impressed with the amount of thought he has clearly put into this, however, I’m not sure it benefits most users to think this deeply. I think you get used to the tool you are using. As long as it is not defective (flat sole, decent iron etc.) then the tool...

    Hand router plane...

I bought one of these earlier this year from Banggood and I gotta say it’s a fantastic tool. I already have a record one, but wanted 2 so I could keep one at final depth (the depth stops on the Stanley/record are woefully bad). Tbh, with the Hongdui I only really need one as the depth stop works...

    Slightly restricted planer suggestions

I have the 260 Jet and I’m not a fan. The aluminium fence is bowed from top to bottom I always get snipe when thicknessing. Have you considered the Hammer? There are a couple on eBay right now, 260s and 310 for between 1 and 2 grand. One of them has the helical head. I’ve not used one myself...

anyone tried a slightly larger blade in a Festool 55 tracksaw?

I’ll have to check, but I’m pretty sure North London Saws charge about £7 to sharpen a Festool 55 blade. This goes up if they have to replace any teeth, if too many teeth are unsharpenable they let you know. I don’t have to pay postage because they are local to me.

    First time shellac...

Hi, I’ve been mixing shellac quite a bit lately, I love that I can get all the coats done in an afternoon. 100g per 1/2litre is approximately a 2lb cut. I use 99.9% denatured alcohol, but I’ve heard that meths is also fine. If you find you’re mixing it a lot, a cheap coffee grinder and a...

    Keir Starmer

Ok, I promised myself I wouldn’t post about this again, but you have so spectacularly misunderstood what I wrote I’ve got sucked back in, idk, maybe you’re just trolling, but I shall try to explain one last time. Of course the GFA is not hundreds of years old, it was only signed in 1998, indeed...

    Keir Starmer

Your notion that the GFA was a couple of decades ago, and that that means it’s old news displays a fundamental misunderstanding of its significance. The issues the GFA addresses are measured in centuries not decades. I totally get it that not many folk over here learn about this stuff, but in...

    Keir Starmer

Withdrawing from the GFA would be absolutely disastrous. Do you really want British troops back in the north of Ireland, loyalist death squads killing lawyers and journalists, Republican paramilitaries blowing up targets in England? Innocent civilians in Ireland and England killed? I really can...

    Keir Starmer

Look up “internment”, “Guildford 4” and “Birmingham 6” Now you could argue that these were failings of the government and the police rather than the courts, but it doesn’t really matter. What matters is the GFA necessitates the confidence of northern Irish republicans (and loyalists), and...

    Keir Starmer

This may come as a surprise to you, but the Irish, especially northern republicans, absolutely do not trust the British judiciary

    Another Unknown Sheffield Saw Company...

This is the hand tools section of a woodworking forum. Maybe take this nonsense to the off topic section, or even better to twitter.

Multi tools, huh! What are they good for?

Any bladed article with a locking blade, fixed blade or blade over 75mm is illegal to carry without good reason, a multi tool is no exception. The only knife you can legally carry without a good reason is a folding pocket knife without a blade lock with a blade length of 75mm or less (SAK is...

    Banggood, VAT, import duties

Just arrived. Super fast delivery, got my VAT Reciept. No fuss. Looks like a nice tool, no time to play with it today, but will report back

    Banggood, VAT, import duties

Idk Tom, I mean the innovation of this style router plane goes back to Stanley in 1884, although even they were proceeded by Preston (the Preston pattern was quite different). My rather old record router plane is an exact copy of the Stanley, this Hongdui router is slightly different (the...

    Banggood, VAT, import duties

I’m thinking of getting a router plane from Banggood. I’ve never bought from them before, does anyone have any experience with them? Are they legit? They claim all VAT and customs duties are included, is this true. Do I get a VAT invoice (I’m VAT registered)...

Mitre saw - Rutland V Makita

We used to have a Festool mitre saw, but the owner selfishly took it with him when he moved. I replaced it with a makita, and while the cuts are the same as the Festool, the dust collection is truly awful, so much so I wouldn’t buy another one. Idk what the dust collection is like on the...

    Digital Calipers

Personally I use dial Calipers. Less to go wrong, no battery to go flat and easier to read than the verniers. Axminster do a pretty decent one for around £45

Colleague smashed top of my Festool CT Mini

    WoodRat wanted

Hi Seb. I could sell you mine. I have the Woodrat and a full range of dovetail cutters. I am pretty sure I have all the bits and pieces that go with it, I’ll check at work tomorrow. It is a useful thing, but I tend to cut dovetails by hand nowadays, and all the other things it can do I generally...
