    Slingshots

In the semi urban situation & country you are in best tool for the job would be a good powerful air rifle, it will do the job out to the range you can shoot accurately, for me with a .22 & scope that was 30 yards. Modern air rifles have come a long way from those of the 1970's. Free food & a bit...

Do you make angle cuts often? I mean anything other than the common mitre cuts for skirting or tapers for table legs?

I am a boatbuilder & am currently restoring a vintage launch, lots of angles cuts on an old wooden boat, a sliding bevel gauge is one of my most used tools.

    Slingshots

I used to be a good shot with a catty & regularly hunted rabbits with it. As to keeping numbers down forget it you wont even dent the population. Silenced .22 is only solution, or ferreting, but i dont suppose you have those in NZ, the consequences of ferrets escaping & beeding in the wild would...

    Decent UK Plywood Suppliers

Todays plywood is a far cry from what we used to get. Even so called exterior is all but useless, made in the far east of poplar or eucalyptus with a thin red surface veneer, most of it appears to be stuck together with wallpaper paste & lasts about as long. We used to have Silvermans near here...

    Mechanical pencil alternative

I have always used a variety of pencils that lay about everywhere. Also i like ballpoint pens though i know i will be crucified for saying it! Carpenters pencils i find useless & the last lot went in the stove. One thing all pencils have in common is their magnetic attraction to a space time...

    Finding or building a workshop

I started out in 84 with a cowshed on the side of a barn on a local farm. Had it for about 18 years. Trouble is farmers have caught onto the worth of unused buildings & so have estate agents. Rents are nearly as high as light industrial down here in the south east. Also councils have wised up to...

    Wood id

Greenheart was useed a lot for dock pilings & very rarely for any decorative use as its quite a bland timber, i was given a few lengths of it last year & you wouldnt use it on a boat to look pretty. My money is on Iroko.

Rawhide mallet. What would they have been used for.

Rawhide mallets were & are often used in sheet metal work, When new they are varnished & are quite hard, this softens up with use eventually!

    Oil for new gear lathe?

I was lucky enough to get a Harrison 140 from the college where i worked as a technician when they closed the workshops. Built in 1971 & still had its original manual & test chart, plus all its original accessories, never saw much use either. Great lathes.

    Drilling stainless steel

In answer to Clogs, Maybe i will try cobalt next time i have a big drilling job, But i havent had the need to buy drills for years since the day i cleared a couple of engineering workshops in a college & school, I ended up with enough boxes of drills to last me a lifetime! You are right about...

    Hire a Micro Digger?

^^^^ This, We had a hedge grubbed out & old rockery removed. A local lad came with his mini digger & did the whole lot in a day. Fast, efficient & cheaper in the long run.

    Drilling stainless steel

I used to machine a fair bit of stainless steel for boat fittings, For drilling slower speeds & good feed pressure are the recipe for success. Plus use plenty of cutting oil it keeps the drill tip cool! I always use a good synthetic cutting oil, Turning Stainless i use the same stuff, I use Hss...

Post a pic of something you have recycled

Heres a bar i made for our yacht club's centenary bash last saturday (10th), Recycled stainless steel kitchen unit frames, mdf out of a skip, secondhand scaffold board top & a worn out damaged grp rowing skiff that was to be cut up. Took me about 4 days to knock it together & paint it up. Came...

    Orbital Sander under £200.

I just bought a sealey random orbital, its variable speed & pretty quiet on lowest setting. If if lasts half as long as the sealey er150 it replaced I will be happy, i bought that one in 1995!

    What radius arris?

As most of my work is on boats an arris in the usual sense isnt used. Sharp edges anywhere on a boat are a disaster as they will get knocked & paint or varnish chips. Plus when you land on things or bump into them a nice radiused corner doesnt hurt as much! I usually use an 8mm minimum radius...

    Adult tricycles

Mum & Dad had electric bikes, when she got too old to ride the bike he bought an electric trike, she found it terrifying, I rode it & found that it felt as if it was trying to follow the camber or hollows downhill. Dreadful things.
