What are the most beautiful tools that you own

I have several, A long marking gauge with wedge locking, probably made by a friends grandad who was shipwright building Thames sailing barges. A long James Howarth 1.5" paring chisel, i got it out of a container of scrap iron & as the handle was riddled with woodworm i turned a replica for it. A...

    Stall set up/advice

Well we did the Pink Toothbrush Alternative market & record fair, as i half expected for us it was a blow out, For most of the other stall holders it was the same. I think the market has some milage as its a good venue in the centre of town but a cold grey sunday meant it was quiet. Good...

    Hornbeam

Hawthorn is hard as hell but often tends to grow in a spiral fashion, cutting it into planks it wants to turn into aeroplane propellors! Trying to dry a log without spiral shakes will be hard. We cut some about 4 years ago & i machined some up a few weeks back for guitar fingerboards, It seems...

Old Machines for a working heritage museum.

When i got the bandsaw in 1984 it was missing some bits, I wrote to Wadkin gave them details & they told me when it was built, Obviously they told me wrong! Wish i still had it.

Old Machines for a working heritage museum.

If its any help i had a Wadkin DNA 158 bandsaw with exactly that style of brass nameplate, they stopped making that model in 1926. You wont get specific spares, Generic bearings ect will be available at a cost, but are unlikely to be worn out, Wadkin built their machines to last several...

    Strange OSB3 and fibreglass roofing

Baldkev is right, Get yourself a paddle wheel roller, for a roofing job you need one at least 6" wide, It consolidates the wet mat & gets the air out making your resin go further. Without it you will use far more resin.

    Strange OSB3 and fibreglass roofing

If you are fibreglass sheathing a roof (or deck of a boat) its worth remembering that Polyester resin is a pretty mediocre adhesive so often relies on a mechanical bond, Best way to scurf it up is with a coarse sanding disc on an angle grinder, 24 or 16 grit will score the surface well. Second...

    Glue & Teak

This^^^^^ Epoxy has low UV resistance wherever you are & will go gingery & fail within a few years or less. Resorcinol is good but mix ratio is critical & it does not like cold conditions. Foaming PU glue is useless with even less UV resistance than epoxy. Titebond 3 is pretty good for outside &...

HPLV or LPHV for CNC / Table saw

I had quite a bit of experience with this working in a school as a technician, We had separate extractors for each machine namely Numatic NVD 750's which are a common HPLV extractor often installed into schools by service providers under supply & maintenance contracts, Each bandsaw had its own...

    Only taken 45 years

GTL planes are often found with brass bodies, people often think they are worth a fortune but unfortunately they are not! mine cost me £15 20 years ago probably worth that today! Just saw you are building a CBG, i just came in from the shed where i have several on the go.

    Stall set up/advice

I just stuck my name down to do an Xmas Alternative market & fair in the Pink Toothbrush nightclub Rayleigh on Sunday the 4th, It started as a record fair but had broadened its remit to a rather eclectic bunch! A few years ago i built quite a few cigar box guitars & still got most of them left...

    How To Buy Hardwoods

Once in a while you have a stroke of luck, today i took delivery of a lorry load of Victorian floorboards from a long since demolished building, A scrap dealer friend asked me if i wanted the lot before he unloaded it. Best Burma teak half of it in 16ft lengths the rest in 10ft & shorts, must be...

I have just bought some weird-looking planes

Horned planes are a continental thing, I picked an old German one up some years ago & it is a delight to use. The have the advantage over metal planes that they are light & can be used either way round pushed or pulled left or right handed. For fairing wooden boat planking there is nothing...

What will happen to your tools when you die?

I have cleared a few sheds & workshops over the years, most are soul destroying tasks with little of value. Got offered another one recently & declined, passed it on to the local mens shed. Father in laws shed is next, nothing i want after all how many stillson wrenches do you need? Biggest...

How to stop mice pinching the traps?

Many years ago i worked in a boatyard, a nearby wharf was sheetpiled & this resulted in hordes of rats being made homeless, they came our way. A varied selection of traps were brought into operation, large mousetrap types & an old gin trap, illegal i know but we set it in a run & its kill rate...
