    Mahogany price?

Well i done the deal, two of the boards had 4 steel bolts sticking out of one of the sides, put a set of stillsons on them & they were just cut off coach screws so unscrewed easily. Still not quite sure what species they are but got the lot plus some shorts 9ft in length for £300 the lot. The...

Here's a warning to idiots like me

I have been using saws for 35 years & that vid made my blood run cold. I remember my dad cutting a short piece of wood on an old startrite 8" table saw, it dug in & flicked it up into his face. The chunk of wood hit him right on the chin & nearly knocked him out. Another friend did something...

    Price for Iroka

If its old lab benches they are made up of narrower bits tongue & grooved together, I had a load out of a college a couple of years ago & they cost me a crate of beer. Should be well seasoned though. Comes from west africa & used a lot in boatbuilding.

    wadkin bandsaw

I had a very similar one, it was a Wadkin DNA158 model. 30" dia wheels 3hp motor. Apparently Wadkin stopped making that model in 1926. It cost me £100 with a wadkin morticer & Dankaert circular saw. It was a great bandsaw but had no brake on it so it would run on for 3 minutes once the stop...

    A Good haul.

Thought i would share with you a few finds! From the bottom a Prestons spokeshave, i picked this up at a boat jumble 25 years ago, one of my favorite tools i use it regularly. Next up a Stanley 030 block plane, i was at a scrap dealers yard a month ago & he had done a house clearance, it was in...

    Metal working lathe

Having owned a myford super 7 i would make the following comments, i used it mostly for air rifle work, although a good lathe its inability to take anything bigger than 9/16 up the spindle limited it severly, parting off was not really possible as the cross slide assembly etc was simply too...

    Metal working lathe

Buy the biggest machine that you can afford, Myfords have a good reputation for modelmaking but good ones are expensive, also they have a piddling small hole up the spindle which is a royal pain if you want to turn any decent size bar, effectively they are always too small for the job. A Boxford...

    Latest vintage tool haul

Many years ago i was using some tin snips like those while cutting some sheet lead up for a model boat keel, they were old & blunt & i caught the end of my old chap between the handles. Made my eyes water i can tell you. Fortunately no lasting damage was done.

Has anyone tried using a surface grinder?

Surface grinders are intended for removing tiny amounts of metal with a great finish, ideal for planer irons etc but i wouldnt use one as a saw, the motors are usually not that powerful & the saw dust would tend to clog up the sliding carriage bearings.

    Flattening machine tables

Slideway services have a big surface grinder capable of doing lathe beds, it depends how badly its warped. Other way would be leave it as it is & bond a sheet of plastic to the top. Im thinking tufnol. acrylic or nylon whaever you can find cheap if its say 8mm thick put it face down on a known...

    Band saw tyre material

About 20 years ago i re tyred an ancient Wadkin bandsaw, a friend got me some polyurethane strip this i glued onto the wheel rim with epoxy. Crowning the wheels was done byone person using a sanding drum in a powerful drill to drive the wheel and another holding a sanding block to the wheel on...

    Afromosia

Its way harder than teak & will blunt tools. It glues well & takes a good finish. Smells nice when working it though i expect the dust is nasty, I have used a fair bit of it in the past on boats as rubbing bands etc but it does suffer from surface checking if left bare or oiled outside.

    Removing a broken machine screw

I have never had any luck whatsoever with extractors, most times i get to do this job its on a boat engine or outboard motor, the latter are fitted exclusively with soft lead alloy bolts that shear off very easily corroded into the aluminium. Trick is to centre punch accurately then go up the...
