    Racal Airstream Respirator spares?

I have had one of these Racal Airstream powered respirators for many years, its a good bit of kit & a couple of years ago i rebuilt it & bought enough filters to see me out. However the fan motor has just conked out, has anyone replaced this with a viable alternative? Only place i have found to...

    Best Lathe Metal Turning Tools.

There is a lot of disinformation about lathe tools, Most carbide tool sets that can be bought cheaply are just junk, good replaceable tip carbide tooling is excellent but far above the needs of the average turner, its meant for serious production work. A properly ground & sharp HSS bit with the...

    Stainless steel - what grade?

I have used several grades on boats, Ordinary 304 (A2) will show surface discoloration quite quickly & need polishing often. 316 (A4) will polish up & stay bright for ages. The secret of drilling stainless is sharp drills, slow speed & firm feed pressure with plenty of cutting oil.

    Lidl Japanese Saw

I bought two last year they do the big double sided one & a smaller single sided one. I like them, the smaller one was so good i went back & bought another three so i could have one on the boat one at work & a spare.

    Problem club members

I was involved with a club some years ago that got taken over, in all my born days i have never experienced anything like it, it was orchestrated by a small clique & it held the club back years. In the end i walked away & left them to it. It is still rumbling on years laterr. I dont know the...

We had one builder do the foundations, shell & roof with windows in, i worked alongside & i did the rest. The builder was...

    What Timber to Use?

I would use whatever i could get my hands on at a reasonable price, all the timbers quoted will do okay. Im surprised that some say Iroko is an oily wood, i have used lots of the stuff in the boat trade & never found any that was oily, it always seems to be dry & dusty stuff. Lots of it today...

Is woodworking in the UK too expensive for a hobby?

Think outside the box, It is difficult to get timber from demolition contractors, they havent got the time to deal with members of public who havent done the required H&S training, Its worth asking joinery shops on industrial estates, Also house clearance places some of which are charity run...

    Glue for Castings

Araldite will work providing the joint is grease free. Use the original stuff that takes 24 hours to cure not the 5 minute version. 30 years ago i dropped a cast iron Record rebate plane of the deck of a boat i was working on. It landed on its handle & shattered it. I stuck it back together with...

Is woodworking in the UK too expensive for a hobby?

Woodworking can be the cheapest pastime you want it to be or as expensive! I have been a boatbuilder most of my career & timber seems to appear its a matter of looking. Skips obviously, beachcombing, recycling the lot. People are always throwing good timber away in fact anyone would think that...

    is my workshop haunted?

Alarm guns are quite legal, they have no barrel just a ring to hold the base of the blank. This is the one i had, there are others a bit cheaper,https://www.amazon.co.uk/BISLEY-GAUGE-BURGLARS-INTRUDERS-SECURITY/dp/B0049ACMC6, Obviously you need to think about where its pointing but i shouldnt...

    is my workshop haunted?

You think a compressor starting up is bad? Years ago i had a workshop on a farm & we had a couple of break ins nearby. I bought an alarm gun for less than a tenner from the gunshop, Its a nifty little device that holds a 12 bore blank & is fired by trip wire. Came in to work one morning after a...

    Any music types on here?

Back in the 70's my music teacher decided that i had no musical ability whatsoever & i assumed this to be true. Years later my son took up classical guitar at a local music school & got pretty good. Then just over 2 years ago we were at a small blues gig at our yacht club, the guitarist had...

    Findable pencils

Back when i had a 1500sq ft workshop i used to lose lots of pencils, when after 15 years i moved out & cleared it i think i found two? I still lose them today, since i started wearing glasses i cant stick them behind my ear any more. I think that there must be a hole in the space time continuum...

    ...best instant heater for garage/workshop.

I used to run a propane space heater, sure it heated the double garage but it got smelly & the walls ran with condensation, All my machines & tools went rusty. I insulated the roof & walls & lined it out with ply. Up & over doors had the foil covered bubble wrap insulation glued to them. Now its...
