Sharpening blades of a Mitre Trimmer

We had a couple of old mitre trimmers at the school where i work they had a straight bevel & were ground on a surface grinder with angle fixture to hold them.

    Not a good day

In future tell everyone who asks its a duelling scar, sounds better! I can sympathise, some years ago i had a startrite bandsaw, the modern type with fabricated frame, it was on a wheeled trolley so i could move it about. One morning i was taking the nipper to school, it was peeing down with...

    Multi TH3/TH1 Thicknesser Restoration Project

Nice job! I have an earlier version i think its an L3? Its main sideplates & most of the rest of it are cast iron & it goes about 3cwt. I bought it for £100 back in 1984 & it had been in a fire. It was quickly done up & put to work, i keep meaning to do a better job but it just keeps on going!

Acoustic guitar under saddle pickup - recommendations?

Disc piezos are very sensitive & will be biased towards treble notes, you will pick up & amplify your clothes rubbing on the guitar, your fingers, anything. They will often feedback like crazy unless heavily damped with silicone rubber or cloth. The rod piezos pick up direct from the strings &...

Acoustic guitar under saddle pickup - recommendations?

Piezo rod pickups are very good, i use them all the time in cigar box guitars & the sound is superb. I machine a narrow slot in the bridge & the pickup sits in it with the top part of the bridge that is notched for the strings sits on it. Look on amazon or ebay & they can be had for around £2...

    Anyone live on a boat?

There is a large & increasing number of houseboats round here, in fact everywhere in the tidal creeks on the estuaries that they can get away with it. Usually this is a lifestyle choice dictated by hard times. For many on low incomes they have fallen of the grid. Most of the boats will be in poor...

How do we get kids to be engineers

Health & safety is an excuse often trotted out for why something should not be done, this is something that often happens in other fields too. In a school pupil safety is of high importance & im sure that many teachers & heads of dept have become horribly risk averse, this is often due to...

How do we get kids to be engineers

Im just the D&T Workshop Technician. Our school is relatively small & has a pretty good set up of equipment compared to a lot of schools today. The D&T teachers i work with are the first to admit they have zero knowledge of woodwork & metalwork so rely heavily on me to teach them on the job as...

    Wood ID help please

It looks similar to Iroko but is way too heavy, i had a similar chunk that i never did identify, I made a tiller for a boat out of it. Another contender might be Greenheart, i have a chunk of that & its similar.

    Clients, designs and decisions

I was a boatbuilder, i learnt that there are a lot of people out there with big ideas & shallow pockets. 35 years of wooden & grp boatbuilding & im still skint. But i did enjoy it!

    Veneer costs

I will be ringing them monday for a chat to get an idea, also Reliance veneers. I have an interesting project, lovely sailing dinghy built in early 60's. Been neglected & needed a new deck, Cost of sapele faced ply from Robbins was prohibitive & not economically viable at nearly £500 delivered...

How do we get kids to be engineers

Well we have started the new D&T gcse course with year 7,8 & 9, lots more theory, all the projects that we used to make to build skills with tools have gone out the window. Projects left have to incorporate learning such as electronics. Lots more demos & virtually no making. Found out yesterday...

    Manufacturing plywood: Then and now.

I remember my dad blagging a trip round a plywood mill at Gravesend back in the mid 60's I think it was Thames marine plywood. To a small lad the sight of the rotary peeler in action slicing veneer was impressive. And of course back then they used decent glue unlike the wallpaper paste often...

    "mahogany"

I have never seen Iroko described as "mahogany". Utile is also called Sipo, Sapele & Makore are similar timbers, then Kaya or african Mahogany, Philipine mahogany is an all encompassing term for red or pink wood that can be horribly soft Luan or meduim hard meranti. Then there is or was Dark...

More on roll top desk restoration

A friend has a roll top desk or what remains of it. It was in a portacabin with a load of other stuff when it was moved by crane. The crane dropped the portacabin through the roof of his barn & needless to say everything inside was smashed to smithereens. The desk is in mostly large pieces & i...
