    Wood preservers for boats

Im restoring an elderly sailing dinghy, clinker built of mahogany back in 1963, now i used to use clear cuprinol mixed with linseed oil & a splash of stockholm tar on restoration jobs. We used to call it boat soup, idea was to put some oil into the wood & preserve it as well. Its so long since i...

A milling machine as a general purpose pillar drill

The Arboga U2508 is an excellent machine, i have one that is ex college & not seen much use. Acurate & very well built with a small floor footprint. The two speed motor is 3 phase & built into the head of the machine so if it goes pop will cost an arm & a leg. Great machine if you can find one.

    extension costs?

We built a big extension 15 years ago, the lower figure of £1500 per sq m was surprisingly accurate. I ran the job & got a friend who is a builder to do foundations walls & basic structure. Other trades such as sparks, plasterer, roofer were engaged as required through recomendation. I worked...

    Driving at night

There is another aspect to this, about 8 years ago in my late 40's i had got to the stage where i disliked driving at night, nothing i could put my finger on but i had found i got affected by oncoming lights more. Driving back from my parents in lancashire during the day my eyes got quite sore...

    is it just me?

The boatbuilding industry has such a body the British marine industries federation, it is costly to join & of little relavance to a small company. There is also the Wooden boatbuilders trade association a great little organisation that punches above its weight. Can it influence buying trends...

    is it just me?

I used to build boats for a living? Now work in a school as a D&T technician, money is not good but far better than being a self unemployed fool. I build cigar box guitars as a hobby, no point trying to sell them as like that jewelery box there is always someone who is willing to make & sell...

    Files and Filing

Im not an expert by any means, i learnt a bit from a technician i worked with who was an acomplished silversmith of awesome skill. I believe the modern diamond files are sometimes used but the rule keeping files for separate materials still applies.

    Steaming

I have bent a lot of wood in my time building & repairing boats. One thing i learnt early on told to me by an old Shipwriright was that you can easily over cook timber. We used green oak if possible or if the timber was dry & possibly kilned we would soak it for a few days first in the creek...

Background music, everywhere there's background music

Our doctors surgery has Heart Fm (other wise known as Shart). It is the most irritating station ever, ten songs played on repeat all day long & the most irritating dj's of all time. Music for dullards. But yesterday i was listening to Radio Caroline's test transmission on 648mw & it was...

There is a demand for electrical engineers so he should do ok. We were lucky that an endowment policy we had kept running paid out & basically covered...

    Files and Filing

Excellent article on files & filing, made me remember a lot of what i had learnt at school & forgotten. Also how useless todays school practical? lessons are. One thing about different materials, If you are making jewellery & using silver you must on no account use files on silver that have been...

    Boxford VSL lathe dismantling

Boxfords have the drive belt running through the headstock & cabinet so you have to either remove the spindle or cut the belt to separate the bed from the cabinet. Easiest way is to cut the belt & fit a linked belt. Or move it as is!

    Wooden bandsaw base.

Somewhere on here i recently posted about my 351 startrite that was on wheels, basically i caught the trailing lead & plug on the bumper of my pickup & towed it over with a mighty crash. Did a fair bit of damage. That had castors 3" out from the bottom of the casing & it was still unstable.

Acoustic guitar under saddle pickup - recommendations?

Hi Danny, If you are building a 3 stringer you can get away without a truss rod. I have not used one on any of mine & they are still straight! I usually make them 25mm thick by about 40mm wide though you can go narrower. Then the finger or fret board goes on top. My first ones tended to have the...
