    British Seagull motor rebuild?

Aah stopping it. My dad had one, it leaked oil everywhere & left an oil slick on the water. They get carbon'd up easily & then will run on when you shut the petrol off. Basically running on excess lube oil. Dads one did this & the only way to stop it was to face it grimly & make a firm powerful...

Axminster paste wax or machine wax?

At the school where i work i got sent a sample of that machine wax with some tools i ordered. No appreciable difference between any other paste wax. Use what you have or an old candle rubbed over it, all will do the same job.

    Wood identification: is this teak?

The pronounced orange colour & heavily interlocking surface checking on at least one bit are a dead give away for Opepe, it is commonly used in sea defences & groynes, Also used for heavy boat keels. It is durable, rock hard, heavy & blunts saw & plane blades quickly. Opepe is very different...

We are with N power, about 18 months ago we noticed our meter had stopped,, electric was still working fine so we reported it & asked for the meter to be changed. Now we have a 3 phase supply & mentioned this. The person on the phone did not know there was such a thing. An "engineer" turns up...

How Dangerous are Metal Bodied Powertools?

I recently picked up an old Kango hammer, in its case with a pile of chisels. Looked to be in good condition but had obviously been in a damp environment for some time. It dates from around 1956 & still has a Round pin plug on it. Last week I asked my son to check it over & if ok put a new plug...

    Keruing Advice

I have used quite a bit of keruing over the years, used to be used for lorry decking a lot. It has a lot of sticky resin in it which tends to weep in little balls in the sun, Not ideal if you sit on it. And splinters are common & they always seem to go septic.

    Startrite 352 bandsaw weight

I had one of the later startrite bandsaws & put it on castors. One day I was taking the nipper to school & it was raining. So in the garage, throw him in his child seat, throw the up & over door up, leap into the Moggy truck fire it up & shoot out the door. Unfortunately the bandsaw was standing...

It is probably not as bad as a highly skilled friend who is a professional furniture restorer, He sold a victorian cabinet to a lady that he had just french polished to a high standard, a few weeks later found out that someone else he knew had been paid to slather the thing in shabby chic chalk...

Well i have never seen a big Harrison described as a Colchester! Shipping container storage issue, help

How close is it from where they can place it now to where its got to go? A 20ft container weighs in at approx 2 tons empty, I would be thinking a trackway with two rows of scaffold boards & some scaffold poles as rollers, stick a block & tackle on it or a turfor & away you go as the boards &...

    Musical instrument build & repair

Julian, Re the Beast, great stuff! There is some real skill there. My son is just about to finish a 4 year electronics degree at Bristol so i have an inkling of what goes into equipment like that. Other project on the go is a laser cut hurdy gurdy, not the U gears one which sounds appalling but...

    Boat shaped Iron Infill plane

Here is one of my collection, I found this on a landfill site about 35 years ago, always been curious about it! It is an iron bodied boat shaped infill plane with no identifying marks, Infills appear to be rosewood or dark mahogany & the scroll topped wedge is mahogany. It has an I Sorby iron...

Show me your double garage workshops!

A double garage is small, even though mine has been extended rearwards by 5ft. Between the two front doors stands a startrite bandsaw, along the left wall is a union graduate wood lathe, then a versatool storage cupboard with lathe bits in it. Next to that is my Harriso 140 metal lathe. Bench...

You are right, good training is worth having. Teacher i now work with spent 1 1/2 hours with three of us doing 2d design, I learnt more from her in that short time than i had in the previous 2 years. With the kids the girls seem to pick it up far faster, we had a lesson last week, Year 8's...
