Idea: How to Search for an Air Compressor

^^^^^ Exactly, First what do you need a compressor for? If you want to drive a little airbrush a tiny diaphragm one will do, if you want to sandblast you will need a monster! In between is a multitude of sizes. Main thing is FAD, Second is Horsepower of motor, If you have 3 phase power happy...

    Axminster price increases

I have bought bits from Axminster for years, I always found them a good company to deal with. Price increases today are due to worldwide shipping problems & delays, Covid pandemic & Brexit. A combination of all three & good old inflation that despite what the goverment tell us is rising rapidly...

    Aviation enthusiast??

I will have a look & see what photos are around, my wifes grandfather Reg lived to 97 & died 20 odd years ago. For his 90th birthday my wifes sister pulled some strings with a friend from Uni & got him a guided tour of Airship industries giant sheds at Cardington, in one corner of the vast...

    Aviation enthusiast??

That looks like a facinating museum to visit, my wifes Grandfather was air crew on Royal navy air service airships during WW1, he flew on SS (Sea Scout) & NS (North Sea) class versions. We have a couple of faded photos of his airship & him working on the engine. Apparently flew anti submarine...

    Them wer't days

I have a good selection of nettlefolds screws courtesy of my dad who had acquired many boxes of them. Most of the brass obscure sizes i gave away to a furniture restorer friend. I raely if ever use brass as most of my work is boat related. I have a stock of Phosphor bronze & Silicon bronze...

    Leaky garage roof

The likelyhood is that its an old asbestos cement roof, waste of time trying to seal it up as you will end up doing it every few years. I put up with mine for 25 years. Increasing leaks & rot in the timbers round the edges, so i had a good look & found that the old purlins were so riddled with...

    De-tensioning bandsaw after use?

I dont bother, old blades that have been resharpened many times may start to show cracks at the bottom of the teeth gullets, then its time to junk them. Today blades have efectively become throwaway items & dont last long enough to crack in this way. As for the bearings getting indented? This...

    Tomatoes

We had blight a few years ago, this year so far we seem to have escaped it. Instead we have poxy spider mites. Started getting them on late season chilli plants indoors a couple of years ago, this year the little gits are attacking everything even outside, tomatoes & french beans have got them...

    dust extraction

If a sawbench needs 850m3 per hour a small extractor sucking just under a fifth of the volume isnt going to be adequate. At my last school the service provider had two shopvacs fitted to the sawbench. They were virtually ineffective & the sawbench spewed dust everywhere. You only get one set of...

    Bushes to box off?

We have a large box tree about 90 years old in our front garden every year it seeds & we get scores of little box trees, my wife potted them up & planted them in a hedge. It was doing extremely well until last year when we got the dreaded box moth. The low hedges got infested with box moth...

Old tools salvaged from my Grandparent's houses

My Grandad worked on the railways all his life & was an animal with tools, But he had a beat up old handsaw in his shed, he used it for cutting breeze blocks & then painted it in thick railway points grease. Many years later I had a look & under the dried filth was an old 1890's Diston rip saw...

Offcuts and what to do with them

A few years ago i was working in a school as a D&T technician, one of the teachers would not throw anything away, it got to the point where we could not find anything because all available storage space was crammed with offcuts, one day i had enough & had a massive cull, sanity was restored! I...

Offcuts and what to do with them

Two years ago i cleared my parents house in lancashire, The whole job took 6 weeks. Dads workshop had racks full of offcuts, I am nearly 60 & i swear i recognised many of these offcuts from when i was a child. He had also boxed up everything else down to boxes of reclaimed screws & bent rusty...

    Metalworking lathe buying advice

I started out with a Myford Super 7, good little lathe but it was often too small for things i wanted to do. Next came a Bantam 2000, seemed like a bargain but was a bit of a dog, got shot of that & bought a Harrison 140 from the college where i worked. That lathe is a cracker. Dont confuse the...

    Wooden Ships

Yes its very beautiful & the joinery is stunning, my point was that any boat even if it spends 99% of its time in a marina will one day get caught out in a squall & have to thrash to windward with the lee rail down, some owners like day sailing like this as well! Doesnt make such huge open plan...

    Wooden Ships

Very beautiful but utterly impractical, acres of space & nowhere to hang onto! Boats jump about & sailing boats lean over, nobody is going below on that if its sailing hard, you would simply hurt yourself flying across the wonderfully designed cabin crashing into things.

Ground top tables of a Wadkin FM

if its just staining i really wouldnt worry about it, run a sander over it with 120 & then 240 grit, then scrub in line with a red scotchbrite with WD40, it will come up a treat. The wood running over it will do the rest.

Ground top tables of a Wadkin FM

Are the tops warped or heavily pitted? I would have thought a good sand with a random orbital sander will be more than adequate, this is what i did with my old Wadkin bandsaw. You will likely be needing a Way grinder probably the only grinding machine big enough to take tables like this I had a...
