    Bloq - makers rent space

Sure i like the idea of all that lovely machinery that you get access to but the comment "You can always borrow each others tools", Hmm i wonder how that works, in my experience usually in wailing & gnashing of teeth!

    Bloq - makers rent space

I suppose it has some mileage for buisnesses that cant afford premises in todays sky rocketing rents but seriously the smallest space is 2m x 3.4m at £36 a day, call that £252 a week. It sure isnt for hobbyists! When i started out back in 84 i had a workshop 30m x 6.4m for £35 a week!

Reclaimed wood how do you price

That was my trade back in the day! At the moment i am rebuilding a vintage Saunders motor launch & it will shortly be at fitting out stage, I reckon i have just enough teak & mahogany to do the job, at todays prices i would hate to have to buy more if i run out! Lab benches often come up on here...

Reclaimed wood how do you price

Wood is wood wherever it comes from. Reclaimed or recycled wood may often be of better quality & its certainly well seasoned. I dont give it away. Years ago i was lucky enough to buy a lorry load of teak duckboards that had been ripped out of a telephone exchange, each one 5ft long & made of...

    Detached garage modernisation/conversion advice

Sealant i used was Arbokol 1000 Its a one part polysulphide, it cures slowly but sticks like the proverbial to a blanket. The joint must be clean & dry at time of application, once its on it doesnt matter if it gets damp or wet. Roof was replaced with insulated steel sheets, i got mine from...

    Detached garage modernisation/conversion advice

It reminds me of ours before i did it up. Ours was vertical heavy panels so easy to extend rearwards. A fix for stopping water coming under the walls was wire brush the joint clean & blow out / vac up dirt. Dry out joint with hot air gun & apply polysuphide mastic sealant in a heavy bead along...

So, do most of you use sketch up for your designs?

When i was a D&T technician i got pretty proficent using 2d Design which is the drawing program used by 90% of schools in the UK. It had a few strange quirks such as the undo button would only work one time, not a lot of use if you balls up. It appears to be based on Qcad? Recent updates give...

Veneer supplies. Long sheets, preferably rotary cut bubinga

Last lot of veneer i bought was structural western red cedar & Khaya mahogany from Reliance veneer company in Enfield, A friend who worked for a high end joinery company used to often visit them to pick veneers for projects, a good company to deal with.

    Guns,guns, and more Guns

A BSA Cadet is getting quite sought after, a rough one is about £30 a good one around £80 a mint one with all its etching on the cylinder over a hundred. Mercury probably about the same, good rifles but nowhere near the same build quality.

Diamond or oilstone/wetstone for sharpening hand planes etc and what grade.

If a stone is badly worn & dished in the middle it can be flattened, either rubbing it on a kerbstone which takes a long time or on a belt linisher which is fast though it will do in a belt pretty quick. I now have about 8 stones & some diamond ones, keep going back to the old grey one which had...

Power files? Any advice / experience please?

I got one of the first Black & Decker ones a long time ago, very good though the motor mounted on the side means its awkward to use in some places. I have had a newer B&D one, just as good. Only drawback is the arms are pot metal & will bend if you knock them about. I have a Sealey one that...

    Guns,guns, and more Guns

Hi John, Usually we meet in the gentlemens section of the airgun forums, trouble is if a few collectors pop off at once the market will be flooded & prices collapse! As for guitars I keep making cigar box guitars, its the eternal quest for the elusive perfect tone! Funny thing is the first one...

    Guns,guns, and more Guns

185? You are an amateur compared to one guy i know, A dedicated airgun collector, Ten years ago i asked him how many he had. The answer was "About 400 air rifles & 450 air pistols, I need to stop buying them". He hasnt stopped & you could probably add another 100 of each onto those numbers. He...
