    What got you started ?

When i was about 2 Dad built an 18ft National sailing dinghy, I played in the woodshavings under the boat as it grew. A year or two later my earliest memories are of that boat, Dad & Mum would sail her & i would snuggle under the foredeck in a nest of cotton sails, I can still smell the salt &...

    Men In Sheds

^^^^ Sideways hits the nail on the head, It is the primary reason i havent joined up. Dont get me wrong I spent most of my working life as a self employed mostly skint boatbuilder, H&S was more a matter of self preservation & most of my machinery should have been in a museum. Later i worked in...

    Men In Sheds

I visited the shed again with more tool donations a while back, while i was there an old boy was using a table saw, no crown guard or riving knife & the bit of wood kept riding up, how he never had a kickback i dont know. I had a word with the guy that runs the shed & he had not realised, he is...

    Uffa Fox at Cowes

You start getting near it with 4 or 5 coats, the trick is to get the first 3 on then leave it to dry for at least a week or two before flatting it off with wet & dry & then more coats. Some will put 10 coats on. Good oil based varnish like Epifanes (my favorite) or Le Tonkinous is essential.

    New electrical supply debacle

20 years ago we built a large extension on our house, the overhead single phase supply had to be disconnected & a temporary supply laid on. I asked the electric company if it was possible to have the new supply 3 phase, "no problem" they said, "Cost will be £387 for single phase supply or £487...

    Anyone know anything about tortoises?

We have a Hermans tortoise, now about 17 years old. They will sun themselves in the morning & as soon as they reach operating temperature will go & forage for food, once the sun gets too hot they will find a shady spot & sleep off breakfast, as it cools down later in the day they will go out &...

    Tennis elbows

I have had severe osteo arthritis in my left elbow for years & it meant living with constant pain. Then i got tennis elbow in the left forearm which actually hurt more! I had it 18 months. Doctors were already talking about an elbow operation but decided to fix the tennis elbow first. My doctor...

    Lets talk hedge trimmers.

We have a Stihl/Grasshopper hedge cutter, it is a great machine with a long adjustable angle cutter bar. Superb machines. The yacht club has a large two handled Stihl strimmer, considering the heavy use it gets from everyone & his brother who thrashes it, some of whom probably shouldnt! It is a...

Am I out of touch ;-)

Rawlplug, those drills often came with an orange & blue tin full of proper blue asbestos. Mix it with a bit of water or spit pop it in the hole & ram in with the provided rammer & spike. I used to mix the stuff for my dad. I found an unopened refill pack of the stuff a few years back clearing a...

    Does the kerf size decrease

I always thought that saw sharpeners grind the front face of the teeth & maybe the top face. I have never had a blade come back where the sides had been ground unless it had had teeth replaced. Then the amount removed would be minimal. So it should not make a difference

Working on a vintage 1905 motor launch, yesterday i glued the new starboard beamshelf in. Took the old one out last week & found a rotten streak in it nececitating a new one. Thread sealants

Loctite comes in various grades for different jobs, then there is loctite engineering adhesive, very permanent stuff indeed. All will break down & let go it you get them hot enough 170 degrees will do it. Soldering iron or small butane torch will release any of them. Epoxies will also fail at...

shop bought fancy furniture, how do they justify the price?

^^^^^^ This, & its a lesson for anyone who makes things on a small scale to sell. If you make one thing & its expensive you only need one buyer, no point racing to the bottom trying to undercut everyone else. The only problem is finding that one person!

I'm worried about what people will think after I die...

We pay VAT on virtually everything we buy, we pay duty on fuel, non of us like it but its the price we pay to live in so called civilised societies. Taxing smokers isnt theft any more than paying any other tax, except that smoking kills people & puts ever more of a burden on healthcare...

Time to give up smoking if you are paying nearly a quarter of your income for it.

I'm worried about what people will think after I die...

I gave up smoking 17 years ago, at the time i was a 40 a day roll up man. Today the cost of my habit would be the equivalent of a mortgage. No wonder people have to resort to food banks if they smoke.

    Cancer risks using epoxy.

I spent a lot of years in the boat trade & used a lot of epoxy, plus vinyl ester (also contains bisphenol) & a lot more polyester. I got a burn on my wrist from epoxy hardener years ago & it got inflamed anytime i went near the stuff for some years afterwards. I was one of the few guys round...
