what to make for A-level project?

Unless things have changed a lot since my day, a large part of your marks will be to do with identifying a problem, which leads to a design brief, which is then succesfully addressed in your product. Making a beautifully crafted table/dresser/etc will not be particularly beneficial in this respect.

    I do not like titebond

I've used titebond original for bookmatched centre joints in maple, with invisible glue lines - IMO if you're getting a dark line you need to prep your joints better. No experience with II or III, as they're not recommended for what I do (mostly musical instrument work).

    Home made 'Biesemeyer Fence' Longgggggzzzzzzzzzzzz

The images are still available here: http://www.btinternet.com/~my.webs/Tablesaw_Fence/ **Edit** - they were for about 30 seconds, then they were replaced with a server error message...

Good news for Tesco and Asda shoppers

Not only is that where ale comes from, it's also why all folks of European background have the ability to tolerate alcohol - albeit to varying degrees. The reason Australian and North American aborigines are so disabled by alcohol is the abundance of clean water meant they never developed...

    Walnut and painted WIP

Lovely work, but why on earth is the customer hiding all that lovely walnut inside a painted cabinet?! Seems arse'bout'face to me...

Regency fluted leg - tricks please?

I think the legs look fantastic - the detailing looks very crisp. Bravo!

    Goblet hell

Lovely work Gordon - the pierced design is very nice, and you've done a smashing job keeping them consistent looking.

    Parrot Vice

I have one, which I've used mostly for small metal working tasks, but bought for luthiery applications. I like it for the metal work, and the way it swivels then locks when you tighten the jaws is very user friendly. IMO a good tool, even though I've yet to use it for what it's meant for.

    Cyclists!!!

I think you're very close here, but not quite on the money. I drive a lot in London, and bear no particular ill will to cyclists, but I do get very narked by the way cyclists will weave through slow traffic, using their small size and maneuverability to make headway, yet as soon as they hit a...

    Somebody likes dovetails

You're entitled to your opinion about the aesthetics, that isn't what I objected to. What I found unhelpful and rude was the first response, and the subsequent poster who agreed with it. You were more considered in your response, but you still opted to have a dig at the assumed 'style over...

    Somebody likes dovetails

I think it is necessary to research the builder before dismissing his entire body of work on the basis of one, deliberately provocative, design. Crass statements as 'a criminal waste of wonderful wood' have no place in an adult conversation, certainly not in reference to such immaculately...

    Somebody likes dovetails

Howard Klepper is an extremely able guitar maker, and also a very smart and witty designer. The dovetail guitar was a shot at the traditionalists who claim anything except a dovetailed neck joints is a cheap shortcut, but is far more than a visual gag. I'm lost as to why people would condemn...

    Hand carved bowl

lovely. Is this using your homemade spoon knife?

    Hanging doors

I don't hang lots of doors at once, but think even jacob is over complicating things - all you need are hinges, and the chisel you'll be using to chop them in. The knuckle of the hinge aligns it square on the door egde, and you scribe round with a chisel - KISS!

Les Paul build - update fingerboard inlays

My guess would be vents for glue, to stop the inlay popping up under hydraulic pressure. I opt for sloppy routes to stops this happening... :) I also have enough top and back material for 6 acoustics, and at least that many electrics, plus 2 electrics which are ready fro lacquer, and have been...

    guitar repair

Good quality instruments are assembled under scrupulous controlled conditions, and are intended to be stored and used in similar conditions. If they were exposed to the same shifts in humidty which most furniture endures they would (and sometimes do) suffer splits and structural failures. The...

    Bootfairs in the Tropics!!

Lovely haul Jimi - but I still rate the lie-in I had this morning after a looong week of work! Interestingly, one of the pieces I'm slowly restoring to working order is an ash handled gauge, stamped "7/16, IK, Kenyon,Sheffield". It also features a "Cast Steel" logo on the reverse. It needs...

Corro Dip - If you were wondering.....

The chisel I treated had some relatively deep pitting in places, and i found the dip turned the rust in the pits black, but only at the surface - deep pits benefited from having the black scraped away to reveal more rust before going back in the jar.

Corro Dip - If you were wondering.....

I used the shield tech' Restore on a chisel which I finished tarting up today - I'll post some before and after pics, but it seems to work very much like you've described the corro dip.

    guitar repair

Taking the back off on a chinese acoustic will be tough, not least dealing with inch thick, diamond-hard poly lacquer. Through the sound hole is the way to go - as linked above frets is the place to go for info and tool tips. If you really want to pull the back, rope and wedges are a...
