    My First Workshop WIP Thread.

Another reason to place dpm under the slab is so all the water in your mix doesn't Wick at into the ground, reducing the cure time and weakening the mix.

Building a Bike / Tool Shed - Roofing and Painting

I wouldn't go o nuts on getting break secure euros for this application, as it will be able far simpler for any light fingered scroat to break a pane in the door and pull the panic bar to open the door! (Not a thief, but I am a locksmith!)

Bent table on flip over saw

I have an Elu flip over saw, which I use as a table saw. It's basic but just about serves my needs, in combination with a real saw. However, I seem to have bent the table, not sure how! There is a low spot about 3mm out of flat in the in feed area, and feeding timber over this has obvious...

    Customer service.

IIRC I heard similar from a chap who studied carpentry in France, their sheet goods are approx 1400 mm square.

    Caul fat

I think that's what sheftalia is wrapped in, certainly looks like it. If you find a good recipe they're delicious!

    Tool Tote

Very nicely done - love the machine gun chisel work in the sped up sequences! It also made me realise how much I need to move my bench from under the crap piled on it in my garage, and into my workshop. Holding stuff is so easy with a vise, yet I've been struggling with clamps and ad hoc...

How to remove posts from concrete

I've had success levering them out, using a 6" coachbolt to screw into the stump, and a 6' fence post as a lever. IIRC of 3 stumps I tackled this way 1 failed, the post wouldn't hold a screw well enough. The other two worked perfectly, and slid out with a noise like a cork popping.

    Scratching my head

The example photo is painted white. If this is what the customer wants I would have thought a reasonable template of the stairs followed by a careful mask and caulking would produce an acceptable result.?

    Reverse adjustment plane.

I have a lovely old Sargent Jack plane which works the 'wrong' way. I find it easy to use, possibly because I'm a lefty.

    oops...

Ouch! Easily done, but hopefully a lesson learned without needing to adjust to life with one less digit. I did something similar on a Saf-T-planer at the start of the year, and considered posting a cautionary take on here. The Saf-T-planer is a very forgiving device, but I was being stupid...

Dumpster Dive Find 1: Plywood Chair Back

I second Richard's advice, chemical stripper then a Bleach like Rustins Wood Bleach, followed by a finish of your choice - a very gently amber tinted clear lacquer would look nice.

Replacement of 55yr old brass lock from Mum's bureau

    Photos please, might be salvageable.

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

Steve, a few systems support a GSM sim card and can dial out that way. The one I'm familiar with is the Scantronic Ion-16, which may be overkill for the 'shop, especially as it supports wireless components. Maybe something similar is available in a wired system?

Post a photo of the last thing you made

That looks great Roger - but I'd be a bit concerned about the lock, anyone can help themselves to the contents and lock the door behind them....

French doors - advice on joints and beading

I can't offer any helpful advice on the construction, but when you come to for locks, fit the mortice rack bolts into the top rail, not the end grain of the meeting stile. I see countless doors ruined by fitting the bolts in the end grain of the stile, which compromises the m&t joint at the top...

    Renewing clamps

I have used a hacksaw to refresh the grip on my clamps. Took maybe 15 minutes and worked perfectly. Certainly a sound investment of15 mins, more so than bloviating on this thread. ..

Post a photo of the last thing you made

On Gibsons the frets are bookended by the binding, rather than overlapping it. At each fret end a little nub of binding covers the fret end. Replacement frets need to be precisely fitted in between these nubs, unless you or for the less conservative approach of a complete refret and removing...

    Euro locks

Mark, your door will need to comply with the multipoint locking criteria. It will almost certainly have at least 3 locking points, systems with less are very rare, and usually pretty ancient. There is nothing you can do to make your multipoint lock meet the BS3621 by changing the cylinder, as...

    Euro locks

That screw is just an allen screw, almost certainly on a Yale multipoint lock. Comes out exactly the same as any other euro, but the mechanism covers the hole when in the locked position as an additional security feature.

Steve's workshop - Painting the outside walls

To all the folks preventing your door opening, please also take steps to ensure it isn't just secured in the middle - I've seem more than a few doors which have the bottom third smashed off, leaving a great big hole to enter through. This is why I favour at least 2 deadlocks top and bottom, if...
