    Coronavirus

Countries with the death sentence typically don't have lower crime stats. In fact, if you compare US States with capital punishment vs those without, the Death penalty states have significantly higher rates of crime in general, and murder specifically. I'd suggest the onus is on the Capital...

    Bookcase project

Thirded - granted they're chipboard not MDF, but the veneered oak finish is just that, and they've already done the hard work of edging the fronts and optimising the balance of material strength to shelf width.

    Any Volvo fans on here?

My family have always had them, starting with a 240 estate, and then several iterations of V70. I used a v70 inherited from my grandparents as a work car and it was great, I wish I hadn't got rid of it, I'd get another in a heartbeat if they weren't nearly all diesel, and liable to fall foul...

    Worth saving this Ash

Get the bark off ASAP or it, and the sapwood will be crawling with woodworm. DAMHIK!

    Crack in Armchair Joint

A better, and more invisible repair would be a pocket hole screw or two, in a position where they're not seen unless the chair is upside down. No need to plug, and a screw which is going into facegrain, rather than endgrain. I'd drill and screw whilst the joint is pulled up tight with a...

    Precise and Imprecise Tools?

I'll reiterate my hammer example. A saw with badly set teeth will not cut straight, or will pull to oneside. You may be able to compensate, but that is not necessary with a precisely made and sharpened tool.

Bought a Mafell mt55 plunge saw. Bit of an issue...

It's brand new and eyewateringly expensive - get it exchanged. Your pictures strongly suggest something out missing, or fitted wrong, and at this price point that's unacceptable.

    Ventilation

FWIW, I have a friend with a 1950s maissonette which was plagued with mould on the exterior walls due to condensation. They got a an envirovent system, and it totally resolved the problem. I was very sceptical, but they're delighted with the results. I sealed up the old airbricks and trimmed...

What is a rebated mortice lock

I haven't come across a decent rim lock in 10 years of locksmithing, they're pretty much universally for internal doors, shiplap sheds or gates, and are made of pressed chinesium sheet. Get a decent BS 3621 deadlock with a rebate kit and follow the instructions to fit it. You will also need...

Bog oak coffee table (Finished.....photo heavy).

I'd probably go for a raised panel bit in a drill press. Remove the bearing and drill a suitable hole to let the bearing mounting spindle plunge into the drawfront.

    Reveal

Short answer; to make the reveal even on the opposite side, or prevent binding. It can also adjust for uneveness in the hinges, which aren't always exactly the same. That said, I recently experimented with bending the knuckles on hinges using an adjustable spanner to tweak the reveal on...

    anyone else got a cold?

I've got a 2 year old who goes to nursery twice week, so I have a cold as often as not. What's amazing is that the little guys just keep on trucking with a streaming nose, but I get knocked on my arse*hard* by the same cold, not every time, but entirely too often.

Yes, it's bad, buying my own kitchen instead of making one..

The customers speak very highly of it. The rhinos just speak very highly.

Yes, it's bad, buying my own kitchen instead of making one..

I was lazy, and just screwed some pallet strapping to the back of the plinth, so i can easily pull it out, then stash stuff in boxes between the cabinet legs. Not as user friendly as drawers, but fine for stuff which is rarely used. Eg: I order coffee beans in bulk and store the excess...

Yes, it's bad, buying my own kitchen instead of making one..

I did this, by having all the legs stand on a 100mm timber bearer, then using custom plinths cut from colour matched MFC. I used DIY kitchens, and they'll sell you an 8x4 sheet of MFC to match your doors/carcasses. Finished worktop height is far more comfortable. This also left me with a bit...

    IKEA Finger Joints

I'd suggest a scarf joint. Easier to accomplish, stronger, no special tooling required.

    Staircase

Corners and edges are the worst - so much stress built-in by the tempering, that it didn't take much to ping off a chip. DAMHIOK!
