Bathroom drawers design question - avoid water inside

I've never seen it done but maybe you could still have flush drawer fronts but with chamfered/sloped top edges, or a lip. We have the same need - no plumbing mods in the world can overcome a child's appetite for chaos!

The joys of electric car ownership!

Yeah I wondered about trains! Globally they are mostly diesel. A quick search suggests UK rail miles are 30% pure diesel and 30% pure electric - unclear what the others are. It would be great to see more sailing vessels (I have my own so I'm biased). The main point remains though that there...

The joys of electric car ownership!

I guess it depends on your definition of 'most'. Seems to me that all continuous- or near-continuous-duty ICE applications are incompatible with current batteries. It's hard (in the 30sec I alloted to the task!) to figure out how much of the UK's GHG emissions are due to continuous-duty ICE...

    Fisherman's priest

Yep, I’ve got one that I found in the water on loch fyne. Only about 10” long, looks like elder with a lead core and twine lanyard. Works well.

Help with selecting Iroko for garden gate

What are you using it for? I’ve not used it (yet) but I believe from my local supplier that larch cladding is generally unseasoned. The normal batten-on-board cladding method allows for plenty of movement but for joinery you’d need seasoned.

Help with selecting Iroko for garden gate

Up here in Scotland larch is a common outdoor timber (mostly cladding) and often left to go silver. I’m about to remake a small gate for the second time after my first pressure treated version rotted (got 20y painted), considering larch but I do have a big pile of pressure treated softwood left...

Help please - truing the edges of a box

I've planed oak mitres. Just make sure the plane is very sharp and that you pay attention to the grain direction, and are v careful at the joint itself. I've never used a card scraper but that might be an option too.

    Woodwork in the EVENING

Growing up my dad and I regularly worked until after midnight on whatever was doing, a lot of woodwork but also fixing cars, welding stuff up etc etc. This was in a suburban garage - couldn't imagine doing that on my street now!

    5 1/2 Jack

I've got an old Woden 5 1/2 and it's anything but tinny. Any older jack plane will be similar IMO. Try an old wooden one! They whisk along and are easy to straighten/flatten.

    ChatGPT - artificial intelligence.

It's a great point that there's more to the perception of a sunny day than just the visual signal. There's also more to perception than just perception - we're also simulltaneously fitting the current experience into our memory, thereby triggering and replaying other memories, and all the while...

    ChatGPT - artificial intelligence.

Totally agree, AI is so broad as to be nearly meaningless. I work in the industry, and we don't often use the term 'AI', instead either referring to things by the task they perform or the tech they employ. Nobody really talks about intelligence in my field, but then we are applying AI, not...

    ChatGPT - artificial intelligence.

Taking your example step by step, there are a few operations which I believe are common between human and machine text interpretation. I work on Siri, so I'll use examples from the Assistant domain. Given the shapes, what are the words? Humans and machines do this in functionally-equivalent...

    ChatGPT - artificial intelligence.

One thing I find interesting about machine learning is how it is refocussing computer science on the science bit. Of course we need coders, mathematicians and engineers to make AI happen, but we also need people who understand experimental method and rigour, and how to design studies to tease...

    ChatGPT - artificial intelligence.

I've not heard that distinction before, but it doesn't sound like a real difference between humans and AI. Humans do process lots of physical signals to decide that an object is an orange (otherwise how could we do it?) - we just don't really recognise the processing of those signals in our...

Kitchen cabinets - like no one makes em

Not sure how relevant this is but diy camper van builds sometimes involve frames clad in thin ply for lightness (although even here solid 15/18mm sheets dominate these days). Eg Deep Red - A self-build motorhome - home page

Table saws, full sheets & wide pieces

Another name to google: Ron Paulk. Basically a home made full sheet sized flat mft-style bench that folds away. Keep the table saw for solid timber rips or rig it into the bench like Ron does.

    Plane Knowledge Required

Love my Stanley no 3. Any Stanley or record pre1970s is probably fine, don’t bother with rarer brands unless you want to learn about them first! One that looks well used is probably safer - unused might mean unusable. don’t pay the earth and watch Paul sellers for restoration and fettling...

    Arc welder Rods/Sticks storage

As others have said, for 6013 is not worth worrying about. And unless you have an inverter welder, I don’t think you’ll even be able to strike an arc with 7018…

Advice on buying an emergency generator

Sounds about right. I have the 2.2kw Clarke genny, not used it much but it seems pretty good for the money. Also have a largish Clarke compresses which has chuffed away for over 20yrs with no issues.

    Table saw safety

Here's another (recently converted!) proponent of both Sawstop and two pushsticks - Reg Kreuger, who got a pretty good chunk taken out of his left thumb when he lost concentration while making repeated rips and recovering the offcut with his left hand for the next rip. .
