Is this getting a bit out of hand? - RSV jabs

Well put David - it's hard to imagine that family's experience. It reminds me of a recent comment by Bill Gates, who said that vaccine uptake is only a problem in developed countries - in the developing world, where the population still has firsthand knowledge of the ravages of preventable...

Is this getting a bit out of hand? - RSV jabs

Many centuries ago I was a lab scientist working in recombinant drug development - which means we tried to introduce genes for therapeutic proteins into the genomes of cultured cells, or into the embryos of farm animals, as a route to producing the protein as a medicine. I mention this only...

    Nearly got scammed

Timely thread - just this morning I narrowly avoided giving £6k to a credit card fraudster. It was route 1 fraud - they purport to be from the CC fraud team, they list a fraudulent transaction and confirm that it wasn't you. Then they tell you you'll get a text from the CC issuer with a...

    Electric vehicles

Finally made it to the end of the thread - had to resort to my personal jetpack after my autonomous subscription-taxi clocked off to recharge at the local cold fusion plant... Don't think eFuel has been mentioned yet - https://www.efuel-alliance.eu/efuels/what-are-efuels Not read v much about...

Who's got it better US or UK Woodworkers?

We need to stop the tragic trade in human misery that every year sees literally one or two english migrants crossing the perilous Tweed in unsafe small boats. I blame the Go Outdoors in Tweedmouth...

How to enthuse a 4 year old

My 4-yr old's nursery does woodwork - it's brilliant! When we did half an hour in the garage the first thing she asked for was safety glasses :). I think all the advice about keeping it quick and simple is good, and feeding their worldly curiosity by sharing yours makes a huge difference I...

    Need to escape/reset

V late to this thread, and having read through it I can see that things are moving in the right direction and that you've tapped into the fantastic collection of skills and goodwill that this forum has! I think lots of us have experienced a little of what you are experiencing and finding some...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

About 20 years ago a kind gentleman paid a much younger and poorer me far too much money to make him this gate, an act of quiet charity which touched my heart and paid the rent that month. I remade it for him this year as a gift. The paint finish isn't quite as bad as it looks! - it was kind...

A little truth for a change.

V interesting post, though I'm not a fan of being labelled a 'Greta loving enthusiast' just because I think that we might be on the verge of a climate shift that will be bad for our children, and might be preventable. I have been a scientist, and know many, and the struggle to fund research is...

Are EV's good value? Apparently not!

Totally agree! I’ve always been a car nerd and chosen a car that’s faster and more expensive to run than it needs to be to suit my needs. Last three cars were a V8 M3 (my third V8 bmw), a Discovery and now a Tesla P100D. The Tesla is faster than any other large family car I could have...

Are EV's good value? Apparently not!

Maybe it's been said already, but I just want to respond to the comments about why manufacturers targeted premium products (fast, posh cars) before the mainstream (shopping cars). That's normal practice, and Elon Musk explained it in describing Tesla's product plan - you create demand by...

Advice on potential purchase of a workshop

It sounds to me like you have more money and less time than some who are just starting out, and what you really want is to try your hand at this furniture business lark without spending a year faffing about building out your workspace, or going to work for someone else. I can see why a turnkey...

That's lovely. But is it oak? Aren't the tannins a problem with oak utensils?

    How good are Howdens kitchens?

Don’t have much to add, have found Howdens OK (and easy to open a self-build account) but in the mid range I prefer IKEA for the thing that the trades hate - the lack of a rear service void. I’ve never had huge kitchens so the extra storage volume (10-15%) more than offsets any fitting...

Notes on Scottish Wood @ Oakley

They have handsaws behind the counter in the showroom which they keep for customers to use. As well as mon-thu they are open the first Sat of every month 9-2. They are a great bunch of people who do a lot for the community and for forestry and sawmilling in Scotland.

Why do we get such a limited choice of planers/machines in the UK?

All I can say is I hope you learned your lesson :D

Table Saw kickback and trimmed finger (Graphic description & images)

My neighbour has the Festool sawstop but I’ve not seen it in use - he prefers his Hammer slider. I’ll ask him about it. Re high blade when ripping - I also find this logically safer provided it's guarded - the overhead crown guard on my wadkin PP makes the guard height genuinely independent of...

    AI chair?

This is quite an interesting application actually. There are many ‘reasoning tests’ , the most interesting of which might be asking an AI in which order to stack a bunch of physical objects (GPT4 can do it). Asking for a design with cut list could be a good one for the new multimodal models.

Planing a board flat - Is there literally no light when testing with a straight edge?

This! I’m slowly getting better at hand planing, but most of the time if the stock is flat it’s quicker to just stick the nice blade in the saw. Or just use the plane for cleaning up the sawn edge as mentioned above.

Fail - Equilateral triangle with 50/50 mitres

Some thoughts 1 Is there any flex in your slider + fence? I’ve found that setups like that can flex a bit under load because the slide is relatively far from the blade. Could you locate your jig in the T slot? 2. Could you joint/shoot the ends with a sharp hand plane? Just fitting one of...
