The Best way to Make Cornice?

Yes same here but my current spindle has a metal fence. That was why I started making the stock oversize. That bit does work well. It is the chamfer where I struggle. I looked in Stephensons book he shows a birds mouth cutter for making the chamfer. I have never seen one. So it will be the 45 block

The Best way to Make Cornice?

Bob I do not think I have used 500m in my life. Maybe 50m When I was an apprentice we used to do production runs for big projects for sitefixing but since then it has just been 4-10m for a project

The Best way to Make Cornice?

Trevanion. I think I will try that next. Although it does require a profile that can run against the fence on the outfeed

The Best way to Make Cornice?

Steve I do not have that luxury. To the left is a slider. I can cut short lengths by clamping them to the slider but 3m is twice the length of my slider. But maybe I can make a fence and hold downs to fit on the slider. Thanks!

The Best way to Make Cornice?

Mike, I am truly grateful for you testing my methods and thinking. I am not sure if your last post telling me how you make cornice on the spindle or just making suggestions so I can check I have thought it through properly. I cannot hold it in the vice because I need two points parallel to the...

The Best way to Make Cornice?

Steve the problem is making the moulding. The mitring is good as long as the back edges are correct

The Best way to Make Cornice?

Yes I have done that the problem is holding 3m x 65x22 still when the face that is down rocks all over the place, but yes the last three sets have been sawn roughly to size and shape and then hand planed to the correct profile. The other problem is because the saw cut is not perfect there is a...

The Best way to Make Cornice?

Sorry I am asking the question not giving the answer. After 40 years I still do not have a technique that I am happy with. As an example I made some cornice recently using age Wealdon 002,003 or 006 50mm spindle cutters (it matters not which combination of these). I make my stock oversize so...

I bought this new on November 2019. The motor has run for about 30 minutes. The Axminster supplied stone is totally unused. You can see the specification etc at the Axminster website. It is not damaged or broken. It works fully. I include all the accessories that came with it. For sale...

    What is a cubic metre?

If you bought 5 m3 then you are entitled to that not 5 tonnes (it probably is 5tonnes). go back to them and tell them that they offered topsoil per m3 you accepted that offer for 5m3 and now you want the rest. If you get no joy and you paid on credit card tell the credit card company you have...

How many active turners remain in UKWorkshop ?

Occasionally. There is a book called "Turning for furniture makers" that about sums me up. I turn when I need something for a piece of furniture or joinery. It is 20 years since I last turned a bowl or candlestick.

Apologies for yet another choice bandsaw thread

It depends how much 300mm resawing you intend to do. If it is the occasional piece then something like the RP BS400 will serve you well once you tune it up and fit a good blade. I resaw 8-12" on mine no problem with a new blade careful set up and no rush. Several of us on here have one and...

    Joiners: design critique, please.

A contrary view! Type A because I made some windows the wrong way round glazed internally and they failed at the joint (mastic not putty) between the glass and frame. With your type B the weight of the glass is always pushing on your bead because of gravity and pulling the seal between the...

DBT85s Workshop - Moved in and now time to fit it out

If you are going to use the roof space for storing a substantial amount of timber you should leave two or three middle ties/joists out as otherwise you will not be able to get timber up there or back down when there is a stack of timber. The piece of timber has to approach horizontal before...

    Any carvers here?

Mike It depends what I am carving. I have a carvers vice for carving chair legs etc which sits on top of my bench and raises the work about 9". I have a carving arm for carving in the round which goes in my vice and will raise the work probably upto 18" above the bench. The third option for...
