Drilling my #7 jointer for a fence

Jim, Thanks and spot on adapt all you need. As for fences, my view is a fence on a plane restricts its use mainly because I tend to skew the plane around to suit the grain, wood or just to make it easier. I know fences are sold but they are like stabilisers on a bike once you can do it they get...

Drilling my #7 jointer for a fence

Jim It is definitely not sacrilege to adapt tools so that they are more efficient for your use and as you say it is only a Axi own brand. Far better to adapt a tool and give it a new lease of life then leave it to rust in your tool box. The 1/8th gap between blade and fence is easily fixed by a...

PVA leeching through maple veneer RESOLVED

Graham, I am delighted you have resolved the problem but for my education could you explain the cause of the black marks and the solution?

    external doors with loose tenons?

If you can route a hole 65mm deep then cut a hole from both sides. You then have 20mm in the middle to chop out with a chisel. You can then square up the corners and allow. For the wedges. If I used my Morticer I would cut the mortice from both sides.

    Experience with anti fatigue mats?

I use tthese "Sole" http://www.return2fitness.co.uk. I tried other brands which helped but I find these the best. You also need to get the right exercise regime. Get your GP to send you to see a Podiatrist

    Woodworking for children

Aldo, you seem to be doing pretty well. Keep going in that direction. My only advice is that toy tools can actually be counter productive because if it does not work they will soon find out and get frustrated. My son has been using my normal tools since about the age of 8 with heavy...

Quick question for Sedgwick 571 owners - 1.3/16" chisels.

We used to cut a piece of aluminium from your favourite drinks can and wrap this around the chisel to create a small bushing. Heath Robinson but it worked

    Any Woodrat owners on here?

I am a bit old fashioned. A mortice and tenon on an external door is a through tenon and wedged. On windows it is marginal but I usually go with the spindle because of the mouldings I use. For internal doors such as wardrobes I agree the woodrat has advantages but Dom and big Dom have started...

    Any Woodrat owners on here?

I have one that I use from time to time. I do rate it and would not want to be without it but the truth is I do not use it enough. If I made more small stuff like boxes and cupboards then I would use it far more. I seem to spend most time making bigger things such as doors, windows and stairs...

    Another P/T Thread.....

If you only use recycled wood I would start by considering what is the cheapest disposable blade system and then buy a machine that accommodates the system. You should probably look for a machine with a tersa block. If you use standard blocks it will cost a fortune in replacement knives every...

    Sheffield saw and plane making

Quite right I could sharpen a saw in half an hour when I was 21 and had good eyes in good light. Now I am just happy if I can do a good job in any time. Anyone other than they guy in the video who thinks it can be done in minutes is having a laugh and should give it a try (but not on my saw). I...

    Air filter

Geoff if there is a lot of airborne dust you need to tackle it at source. The air cleaners are ok but not designed to replace dealing with the source of the problem. I have an Axminster unit that is just a quiet fan running in the background, the radio easily drowns it out.

    Last man standing

Thanks Peter If the saw filer ever wants a bus mans holiday I have a few saws, they will only take him a few minutes. The simple fact is to keep even that small number of people working they need to sell a good number of planes. I bought my block plane when it was first released. I am pleased...

    Dust collector for belt sander

I decided to start again and bought the Jet with the cone with 1mu filter. £450 rather than new filters and cyclone then fad trying to make it work If you can afford it buy clip on duct. If not get purpose made clip on slow 90 degree bends with adaptors to suit

    Dust collector for belt sander

My concerns would be: 125mm duct is unlikely to get you the large cfm needed for fine dust removal You need to balance the cost of the HEPA with just putting a bigger unit and a 0.3mu filter on the extractor and a then worry less about the filter back into the room or vice versa and having a big...

    Dust collector for belt sander

I adopted the latter strategy this year and built an outside well vented cupboard to house my extractor. It has the advantage that the air is not recycled along with particles not caught by the filter so you are permanently receiving clean fresh air. This creates negative pressure and draws...

    Dust collector for belt sander

With conventional dust extractors (LPHV) they work on high volume but have very low pressure and in that situation you need a very high volume (say 700 to 1000cfm) to suck up all the fine dust. However because of the low pressure you then need large diameter pipes say 150mm or 200mm in order to...
