12” Saw Blade in 10” Saw!

I have a Dewalt 1251 Radial Arm Saw which is a 10” saw with a maximum depth of cut of 68mm. A few months ago I was wondering if a 12” blade would fit in the saw guard/cover without hitting the guard or anything else. I found that a 300mm saw blade would just fit. A 305 might but I am not...

There's No Money In It Anymore.........

There is a musket shot embedded in the timber frame of my house. Interestingly it is perfectly round not the slightest hint of deformation. I concluded that it must have been fired into the tree whilst growing as I do not see how it could have not deformed if fired post construction...

    Bandsaw drift

Correct it is also useless for bevel rip cuts, it was a function of fixing (bodging) the problem at hand rather than the big picture. I had to solve the problem the following week and ended up replacing the blade and full reset.

    Bandsaw drift

One consideration is that the fence does not need to run parallel to the mitre groove. A couple of months ago I set the machine to cut perfect thin veneers. A week later I moved the fence only to discover that it was about 5 degrees off parallel, but cutting perfectly straight for that blade...

    Baffled by bandsaw

Actually this is not a good technique. The problem is that the riving knife has to be set lower than the cut and so there is a risk that the stock will take flight. Further the HSE say that the blade must always protrude through the stock. I know it is done but that does not make it "good". I...

    Baffled by bandsaw

The short answer is cutting curves. Properly set up a bandsaw is very good at many tasks from ripping as you wanted, making veneer, cutting dovetails, cutting curves freehand or using a circle jig. It is one of the most versatile machines in the workshop

    Kitchen dresser

Sorry, I thought the idea of posting to such a thread was to encourage and educate others. Offering alternative methods is part of that. Someone else reading the thread may find the range of methods of making coving useful.

    Shelf pin drilling/routing system

I use the Bosch holey rail which works well. The problem I suffer is the holes fill up with paint which then needs cleaning out.

The table saw method is a good technique because by varying the angle of approach you can change the width and depth ratio of the cove. How I do it is to clamp two pieces of 4x2 at the required angle (this is the technical bit) to your table saw you need a line from the centre of your saw at...

    Power feed

How smallish. I have the ITech AF34 which is good but heavy. I have it on a tilt bracket supported by hydraulic arms which works well. The biggest complaint I have is the speeds. If I were looking again the slowest speed on mine would be the fasted I would want. I would then want several...

    Carpenters tool box?

What you are describing is a traditional carpenters tool box. Such as this Beginning Woodworking Part 2: Fall Front Wooden Toolbox Normally the lock is a traditional morticed cupboard lock so that the top is as flat as possible and can be used to place timber for sawing.

    Riving knife on circular saw?

If you are only cutting made made board, then the kerf binding is not an issue. You can still get kick back. Am I right this is a hand held saw not a table saw? If so the next question is how good is the spring on the blade cover? Also do you use a track or freehand?

    Hammer A3-31. First impressions

Regular cleaning and maintenance is key especially the the screw threads for the rise and fall table. Six months ago I got to the point of finding raising and lowering the thicknesser table hard work and wished I had gone for the electric version. I then spent half a day cleaning and...

How to change career to woodworking

Bob a little secret whilst no one is listening to us: So do most people. Once we all know that and accept it as reality we can have far more confidence to sell our work (yours is awesome). A few years ago I was interviewed by "experts" to see if I was good enough to go on a prestigious World...

How to change career to woodworking

In which case you should be talking to someone like Peter Sefton about his courses and whether there could be a part time option or just a series of short courses. Also talk to your accountant about whether the taxman will help out with the cost of retraining.

How to change career to woodworking

It is a lovely dream and one I share but do your research very carefully. There are very few making a living making fine furniture in the UK. Most good makers diversify into other things such as teaching or contract work. Others have money so do it because they want to such as Cabinetman...

Using a shop vac around the house... bad idea/good idea?

No it is not a good idea. You will not be allowed to have it back once you get a workshop. So speaks the voice of experience. In the end i had to buy an industrial grade Henry in order to be allowed my shop vac.
