    Door Repair Question

Treat the rotting bits with something to stop them rotting further. Remove the horizontal piece at the bottom viewed from outside and replace it with a wider piece that is fitted to the floor. You could put a bevel on the top edge of the new piece so the water runs off.

I am sure they work wonderfully BUT it is not an alternative to a crown guard. You need protection from that sharp spinning blade. Further it does not stop the piece on the other side of the blade flying.

Jacob, exactly but where a sledge is used, you regularly see no crown guard or it too high to be any use.

    Sorby ProEdge

if it is for sharpening turning tools I can see why the SPE wins, but if it is for joinery tools only then you might also want to contrast the Workshop 3000 with some DMT diamond discs.

I have seen a piece of ply lift as the teeth at the rear of the saw take flight. If you clamp the wood to the sledge then it cannot occur but all too often it is just held by the operator and the flight is too fast for the operator to act.

Yes, I use both a zero clearance home made plate and if I really need to protect a veneer or edge then a piece of 3mm ply specific to the job. The big downside with sledges is that people remove the crown guard or have them set to high so as not to hit the sledge. further I regularly see...

Please help an ***** out with cutting straight (with pics)

Whilst you may need to set up your bandsaw (of which there are many threads on here), it is only a bandsaw and you will not get much better than you have achieved. If you want a perfect 90 you need to make a shooting board and plane your bandsawn face perfectly square. alternatively use a...

I can only recommend the hand stitched ones. I have Auriou and find they do an excellent job at a price!

    Table Saw Sliding Tables

Given you have the space get a slider. If you cut any amount of sheet material a slider is far preferable to a sledge. From a safety point of view the crown guard should cover, as a minimum the top of the blade and preferably all the blade. This is not possible with a sledge

    Mirka Deros

I would compare the Deros with the Festool. When I was looking I was surprised to see the Festool as better value than the Deros Abranet does last far longer than traditional paper based systems and is far better for dust extraction.

Prescription Safety Specs - which ones are the 'best'?

My optician pointed out that we operate most machines at arms length so we do not need the reading element. all you need is good 1m to 5m range which for most blokes means either a single prescription or no prescription and get some cheap reading glasses or a magnifier for detail.

    Choosing correct tools for finishing.

I assume it is a free form curve. Some good rasps would smooth it sufficient to get the spoke shaves working properly say a No 7 Auriou. You would then need a very sharp well set spoke shave to finish if you want those crisp edges

recommendations for furniture making basics book/websites?

The Technique of Furniture Making by Ernest Joyce and Alan Peters. It was last updated in the 1980's so the pictures and machines are out of date. But for basic technique and how to do woodworking it is excellent. Where about in the UK are you?

    Staircase renovation - ideas?!

Emanuel You need Approved Document K. I am not sure if there is a new version out for the 2010 Building Regs. Here is the one for the 1998 Regs http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/upload ... K_1998.pdf It is paragraph 1.1

    Staircase renovation - ideas?!

If you clad the steps then the bottom step will gain 20mm in rise and the top step will loose 20mm rise. Not only will this drive the occupants to despair but the stairs would not comply with Building Regs as all steps in a run must have the same rise and going.

    what wood for outside table

How much rain do you get? I have a teak table that has lived outside for 10 years on Crete. It has been sanded down and teak oiled each year and has been under a canopy made of olive netting to keep the strongest sun off it. The table looks as good as when new. I would not use any man made...
