    Tablesaw Usage

A few points: 1. A push stick will NOT stop kickback it only stops your hand from ending up in the blade. 2. Where is your Crown Guard when all this is happening. A good Crown Guard is a deterrent for Kickback as it stops the wood riding up the back of the blade 3. There is a world of...

Finally got a table saw! Good price??

A riving knife and crown guard are essential. I would also make a zero clearance plate so that there is no enormous gap between the blade and table. You will probably need a finer blade

I agree with Kevin. One question how long was the piece you were cutting?

Which course, Paul Sellers or Peter Sefton

Jacob, the thread was started by someone asking which course was best. The course providers only commented when asked direct questions or bated by you. To now suggest they should not be allowed to defend themselves from your prejudiced views is the height of hypocrisy. Earlier you suggested...

    Wobble saws

Geoff, a wobble saw is better than the disc but not as good a the micro or shim adjustable groover that have dedicated nicking cutters. My experience is the wobble saw is a good industrial groover which is good at cutting grooves along the grain. I do not agree that there is no breakout with a...

    Best lighting for a workshop?

Earlier this year I changed all my fluorescent tubes to LED tubes. The light is better and more even. I am happy with the change. The 2013 article was interesting but the price point of LED's has changed so I would suggest checking the current price.

Panel Saw - Limited space..what to buy

I would manage with what you have until you move and then buy the biggest panel saw you can, probably with a 2.2m to 3.2m sliding unit with a large outrigger table. You may need to double the budget but there is the world of difference between 2 men struggling to cut a 1500 x 3000 sheet of ply...

HSE implications of renting out a fully equipped workshop?

You would not be their employer so the Act probably does not apply BUT they would say well you rented us equipment that should comply with the Act and other standards so if a guard was missing ill fitted you could be liable. Also as the owner you would owe duties for suitability of both the...

    Wickes Geneva oak veneer doors

I have fitted several they are ok as long as they do not need reducing in size by more than a mm in width or height. You cannot take 20mm off the bottom for carpet etc. The veneer is paper thin but as long as they are finished with varnish rather than oil they finish ok.

    square tooth saw blade

Yes but they had scribing cutters on either edge to stop the speltching

    square tooth saw blade

Unless you are doing loads of them what is wrong with a chisel? You then do not even need to saw every blade width you could saw every 6mm or so and then chisel the waste out. The downside of a flat tooth is that the speltching will be hideous. If you are doing loads of them I would make a...

    square tooth saw blade

Sorry, I cannot help with the recommendation. I also struggle to see how the saw blade choice saves sanding?

    Rip Fence Advice

As Steve says we are talking about one or two thousandths of an inch over the length of a large saw blade. If the blade is less than 300mm I would aim for as perfectly parallel as your measuring ability will allow. With a short fence it is just as important to set the fence carefully it is...

    Rip Fence Advice

Matt The problem arises with a long fence if the timber wants to bend away from the blade. The riving knife will not save the day. If the fence restricts the timber movement the timber will still bow so it presses against the riving knife and saw blade, binds on the back of the blade (the...

    Rip Fence Advice

The third applies to ripping timber only. The logic is that when cutting timber the tension in the wood is released and so the timber might bend banana style and bind on the fence or blade causing kickback. So if the fence does not restrict the wood the chance of binding decreases (not...

    Rip Fence Advice

Interesting, as I tend to set it between the gullet and the centre. However the HSE written advice is still no further than first gullet. The further along the blade you go the greater the need for the fence to be very precisely parallel to the blade or running out slightly. If you have a full...

    Rip Fence Advice

The fence on a table saw for ripping wood should only extent to the gullet of the tooth (not even half way). If cutting sheet materials etc a long fence is often used but it needs to be very carefully set up so that it is at worst perfectly parallel to the saw blade but preferably running out...

    Basic brad nailer/compressor?

I have this nailer http://www.screwfix.com/p/stanley-apc-b ... iler/91803 And this compressor http://www.screwfix.com/p/stanley-dn-8- ... 240v/22374 I do not use it regularly but probably every fortnight. It is not a big compressor and the gun can cope with up to 50mm brads but would not cope...

Why can you not manage with a hammer and punch if you just need it to finish a few diy jobs?

    Who needs precision, I do!!!!

Adam what makes you think the track saw is going to get you this sort of accuracy. The level of accuracy you are looking for is way beyond most woodworking machines without getting into your "Not Square" or wondering if the slider on your table saw is parallel to the blade etc. etc. You might...
