2012 June Challenge ( Post your entries here)

Hiya, Here is my entry this month, a mirror with turned wooden surround that opens up for a place to store some keys. The back piece is made from Maple, turned with spindle and bowl gouge and a scraper. The front and pegs are bubinga, both pieces are sanded from 120 to 400 and then S/S and a...

    What are these..?

Your right, they are a planer/thicknesser and a sawdust hoover or more commonly known as a woodchip extractor. Not sure how much they would be second hand but here are two links to new machines. I think Electra Beckum is now branded Metabo http://www.dm-tools.co.uk/product.php/s ...

    Bench grinders

I would highly recommend the Creusen slow speed grinder, i splashed out after getting into all sorts of trouble with my old grinder, though this was probably due to the stone on it than the grinder (and of course user error!!). Don't be fooled by the 'slow speed' it's anything but slow and you...

    Gear Box

Where's my hammer, if a bit of a gearbox out of a drill makes you turn that, my old Makita in for a bit of a bashing  I like the photo's with the metal cog in the assembly, it seems to pull the two parts together were as the photos without, seem to be missing something. =D> Very nice...

    copper nails on stumps....??

The girlfriend used to be a head gardener and says her friend had used this technique and swears by it, you apparently need to drive the copper nails all around the base! though she has never tried it herself. There is round up which is really good, and she has used with great success. Cheers...

    Lathe bed

I would recommend a lesson with Steve who works at Toolpost. He can give lessons from the toolpost shop where I think they have the Wivamax Lathes or from his own workshop where he has a couple of lathes one being a VB36 - very nice machine but due to the high cost I think in my case there would...

    Can you recommend a finish!

Thanks Steve and Chas, I really must learn how to 'French polish' Which as you say would be really nice as a finish, I am just too chicken to try it on the clock as I know I will muck it up!!! Thank you very much Richard, I picked up a tin of the hard wax oil this morning and used it on a scrap...

    Can you recommend a finish!

Thanks Phil, It was after reading on here about the pitfalls of using wirewool on oak that I have stop using it. I'd been lucky up to date, though I think this was due to using polyurethane which is quite a thick barrier between the oak!

Hiya, I am just finishing that other type of wood working i.e. not turning. Yes, alright I can hear the boos and hisses from hear  It is a tall case clock made out of oak with quite a bit of medullary rays in the wood, I am looking for a finish that is natural in colour and would help...
